PowerMat acquiring wireless charging rival PowerKiss

Powermat announced today, that they will be acquiring Finnish wireless charging rival PowerKiss, which sees both companies combining under the Powermat brand.

Duracell Powermat

This brings together more than 2500 wireless charging spots in coffee shops, airports, and stores in the USA and Europe. Both companies had also once allied under the Power Matters Alliance (PMA), to combat against rival Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) which supports the Qi standard that Nokia, LG and Samsung currently use in their products.

Huge gain for the Powermat Alliance, I guess. They already have huge names like Duracell, Google, AT&T and Starbucks on their side. Though that being said, it’s a little silly that there are two different wireless charging technologies and they are being backed by different retailers and mobile manufacturers.

We’re just going to have to wait and see how this whole thing pans out, eh?
