Selected 2012 Sony devices will receive Android 4.1 from February 2013

Sony Xperia Ion Review

The deal is as raw as it gets when it comes to Sony Mobile’s handling of Android 4.1 updates for its 2012 Xperia smartphones. While it has already been confirmed that 2011 Xperia smartphones will not be updated past Android 4.0, Sony Mobile released details today on which 2012 Xperia devices will be updated to Android 4.1 and when the update is scheduled to roll out to the respective devices.

If you do own or are planning to pick up an Xperia T, TX or V, two of the three Sony smartphones launched at IFA earlier this year, Sony Mobile expects to deliver an Android 4.1 update to your device during February and March of 2013. The low-end Xperia J, the Xperia go and the older Xperia P will be updated from the end of March, following which the Xperia S, SL, ion and Acro S will be updated as well. Therefore, if you own an Xperia S, you could potentially be waiting till April or May 2013 to receive an update to a version of Android that not only isn’t the most up to date version even at this point, but will also be 10-11 months old by the time you receive it on your device.

Needless to say, this is disappointing, while absolutely not unexpected.

I think its fair. In my family, we have an Xperia Pro and Acro S. The Xperia Pro is on ICS, and struggles with the demanding OS. I wish i hadn’t upgraded it. However, the Acro S flies and will have no problems. Its natural to want the latest, but after owning 6 Androids, I no longer want the latest. Only the best.
