Facebook reportedly interested in buying WhatsApp

Popular cross platform messaging app, WhatsApp, might be in talks to be acquired by Facebook, according to a report by TechCrunch this morning.

No word on a price or how the far along the talks are, and neither company has commented on the rumor yet, but egads if this is true, it’s a huge win for the Social Network. WhatsApp provides apps for Android, iOS, Blackberry, Symbian, Windows Phone and even S40 and allows users to register by phone number instead of usernames or IDs. Like a multi-platform BBM, it also allows you to IM for free, and send images or video along with audio and location as well. The service currently has over 100 million daily users, in 250 countries so far, and as of October 2011 was serving up to 1 Billion messages a day.

Facebook recently bought popular photo-sharing service Instagram as well, so they’re definitely into buying companies and services to strengthen their arsenal. I just hope that a Facebook-owned WhatsApp will not be any different from the current offering. Ugh.
