Nokia loses reign as largest phone manufacturer to Samsung [First time since 1998]

According to research firm Strategy Analytics, Samsung just passed Nokia as the world’s largest phone maker, in terms of shipments.

This is the first time since 1998 that Nokia lost the top spot to any company. Samsung shipped an estimated 93.5 million handsets this quarter, which includes 44.5 million smartphones. Nokia on the other hand only shipped 82.7 million phones.

Even more interesting? If you combine Apple and Samsung, that’s half of all smartphone shipments around the globe. Who’da thunk?
