The California Attorney General has reached an agreement with Microsoft, Apple, Google, HP, RIM and Amazon that will have a new set of privacy policies put into place.

With all the legal back-and-forth going on in the smartphone scene, it’s nice to have something good come out of a courtroom for once. The Agreement will basically require any software that uses personal information to provide a privacy policy that can be viewed in the store before any app is downloaded. It will also be required that links to the relevant documents are provided in an obvious and consistent location.
Each app store will provide a simple way for users to report developers that violate any of the rules, and each platform has to educate developers about their obligations to respect consumer privacy and to disclose any private information they might have collected, how it is used or how it is shared. Violators can be prosecuted under California’s Unfair Competition and False Advertising laws.
