I’m not sure how many of y’all might remember this, but Plazes was a somewhat popular GPS-based social network service back in 2008, that was acquired by Nokia.

Plazes was a neat little service that was described as a GPS-tagged-Twitter . Way back in 2008, they had an iPhone app that detected the users location and then presented a few suggested descriptions of nearby places. You could then ‘choose’ a place and send ‘activity’ messages to your friends, sort of like a tweet tagged with location based information. Plazes would then compare these messages in their server and notify you if you’re in the same neighborhood as any of your friends, etc.
Now I keep stressing 2008, because that was way back before even Foursquare started out. What took Nokia so long to complete Plazes transition is beyond me, but it looks like that’s finally happened. I got the following email on my Plazes account (Long time member since I was always a fan of GPS based things heh):
Just a quick note to let you know that your Plazes check-ins and favourite places are now available to you on Nokia Maps. Simply log in to your Nokia account and you’re good to go.
With Nokia Maps. you can search for interesting places and find your way there with smart directions for walking, driving and public transport. And if you find somewhere new on your travels, you can add it Nokia Maps, write reviews and ratings and even add photos.
Thanks for being a member of the Plazes community, and we hope you enjoy continuing your journey with Nokia Maps!
As a result, all your Plazes check-ins and favourites should now be available over on Maps.Nokia.com. Just a heads up if you were part of the service back in the day.
Update: Plazes just clarified their email. Data has not migrated over yet but is in the process.
You have been erroneously informed that your Plazes check-ins and favourite places are now available on Nokia Maps and we want to clarify how the Plazes.com ramp down is going to happen.
Nokia has acquired the services provided through Plazes.com. Together with the Plazes team, Nokia has been working on further improving and developing location based services like Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive and more, which millions of consumers around the world are using every day on their Nokia smartphones or on the web.
To consolidate the user experience on Plazes.com and on Nokia Maps we are going to give you, as a Plazes.com user, the option to migrate your check-ins and favourite places to Nokia Maps or to download them on your computer before ramping down Plazes.com.This process is planned for the near future but has not started yet, as erroneously stated in the email you have received earlier. We understand this is an inconvenience, but no data has been migrated yet and we will make sure, once this process starts, that you will have the option to accept the migration or to reject it and download your data for private use.
You will be informed accordingly when the migration process is going to start.Your Plazes Team
