NVIDIA just announced that their new Tegra 3 architecture will be called “4-PLUS-1″ for the quad core system.

Basically the same 4 cores Cortex A9 system-on-chip that we’ve heard about earlier, which is supposed to be easier on the battery in terms of battery consumption. NVIDIA states they needed a user friendly name after feedback from customers, and is hence trademarking the 4-PLUS-1 moniker. The name, as you might already know, comes from the fact that the Tegra 3 chips use a fifth core that’s active when a lot of CPU power is not needed, and handles background tasks like checking for new email, or basic things like watching video. When more performance is required, the other four cores kick in. As a result, less power is used from the battery. If you’re interested in exactly what’s going on with the chips, you can find it on NVIDIA’s website (PDF Warning).
