When I first heard about Bad Robot Interactive’s awesome Action Movie FX app for iPhone and iPod Touch, I was sitting with a friend at a peaceful little cafe in Delhi when he said “ZOMG, look at this!” and proceeded to show me a quick video clip of the aforementioned little cafe being blown up by a missile attack.

Very Cool.
Naturally as a result I wanted to try out the app myself and proceeded to download the app.

Action Movie FX is created by the Bad Robot Team, who also happens to be J.J. Abrams’ production company (hence the Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol logos in the main screen) and gives you three basic free effects to start out with.

You can choose from a Missile Attack, a Car Smash (personal favorite) or a plain ol’ demolition rock that falls from the sky.

All you need to get started, is to select an effect, record a movie that’s atleast 5 seconds long, and then set a starting point for your effect to come in. There’s even an instruction screen to make sure you align your video with the effect properly, so that it looks as realistic as possible.

Unfortunately the app doesnt work with previously recorded video, which is a bit of a bummer.
A few seconds to process the video, and it’s done. You can watch your new masterpiece of destruction play out on screen. From there, you can share on Facebook or email the clip, or just save it to your camera roll. And if you want more effects, you can buy them, at $0.99 each. As you can imagine, I ended up buying them all. So much fun to be had! Here’s a couple sample videos I uploaded for your viewing pleasure.
I checked it out on our Review iPhone 4S and my iPhone 4 and it worked fine on both. Took a little longer to process on the iPhone 4, but that was no suprise seeing how the iPhone 4S has a dual core processor to help out in that regard. According to the app reviews on the iTunes page it doesnt work so great with iPods though. Here’s an overview of the entire app on the iPhone 4S, just to give you a better idea.
Definitely worth checking out y’all. Available free over on iTunes. Compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (4th generation), and iPad 2 (stretched). Requires iOS 4.3 or later.
