Popular GPS crowd-sourced application, Waze updated their iOS app today, bringing a hands-free way to activate and file reports with the iOS version of the software.

Users can report traffic jams, speed traps, accidents, and even update existing information. Waze is waiting for Apple to open up their Siri APIs to developers but has been able to use the iPhone’s proximity sensor to activate a voice-controlled interface in their app. Simply waving your hand will start up the voice control, and drivers can navigate, report traffic or road hazards, and other waze-y things. The app uses Apple’s own native Siri speech recognition for addresses and local search queries, and automatically disables text input if the car is in motion. Here’s a demo of it in action:
What’s New in Version 3.1
-Hands free operation – Use voice commands to share road events or have Waze direct you to home or work. (Initially available for US & Canada only)
-Share your location or destination via text or email, or update others on new ETA when running late. Your friends can click on the link in the message and launch Waze directly to that destination.
-Navigation list is back! You’ll find it in main menu while in navigation
-Improved Bluetooth support
-Lots of bug fixes and optimization
No need to push a button ever. Seems like a good idea, eh?
