Yesterday, it was found out that popular mobile social networking app, Path, was uploading entire address books from users phones on their servers, in plain text. The data was only be used to notify you if your friends signed up to Path, and transferred over SSL, but it caused quite a stir.

As a result, Path has apologized and wiped any personal address book information from their servers, along with updating their app on iOS to provide a prompt to ask whether you’ll be interested in being notified when your friends sign up for the service. Nice to see Path being clear and pro-active with the entire thing, but this is a dire reminder of how much access mobile apps have to your personal info like your phone address book on iOS (and Android) and how we all should be a little careful when signing up for any service that seems to be the latest fad.
This, coupled with Google’s latest privacy policy update, I’m thinking the Internet isnt so private anymore these days, eh?
