Responding to a rumor started by a certain troublemaker, Microsoft’s Brandon Watson, Director of Developer Experience, confirmed today that the upcoming Windows Phone 8 OS updated will run older Windows Phone 7 apps as well.

Rewatch Mix11 keynote. We were pretty clear on this. Any app built today will run on next major Windows Phone version.
So developers will not have to port their apps over or modify them in any way. If Windows Phone really does get higher resolution support in Tango or Apollo, there might be some of fit-to-screen functionality like iPhone apps do for the iPad. But yes, all apps should work on the OS update. So… there you go.
