The European Union has officially approved Sony’s buyout of the Ericsson part of their joint venture with Sony Ericsson, to retain complete ownership of the company.

The detail was announced back in October, but now Sony has control of phone development and full rights to the company’s entire patent portfolio possibly. Sony already started the rebranding a little early, releasing the Sony Xperia S and Sony Xperia Ion at CES that did not bear the Ericsson name.
The company posted a €247 million loss last quarter, so hopefully this is a sign of better times for Sony.
