Apple’s wildly popular iPhone just made the company sneak past Samsung to become the number one manufacturer of smartphones. That’s a lotta iPhones y’all.

In the last quarter in December, Apple sold 37 million handsets which just edges out Samsung’s 36.5 Million. This comes in from both Strategy Analytics and IHS iSuppli. Samsung doesnt release smartphone sales specifically, which has made both firms release estimates, but it’s still impressive numbers from both manufacturers. Smartphone sales are rising, and according to Strategy Analytics, the total number of handsets shipped last year increased by 14 percent, to 1.6 billion.
Globally, in terms of all handset shipments including both smartphones and other handsets, Nokia still retained their number one status with 26.9 percent in 2011, followed by Samsung with 21.1 percent. Apple only came in at 6 percent there.
