Google’s Android OS has overtaken Symbian to become the top smartphone OS in India in terms of marketplace, according to IDC’s India Mobile Phone Tracker Report for Q3 2011.

This comes after Android overtook Symbian in Asia last year. Android has 42.4% of the smartphone market in the last quarter, seeing a growth of 90%. India was probably Symbian’s last stronghold, thanks to Nokia being a very popular brand in the country.
That being said, in terms of smartphone brand marketshare, Nokia was still number one, with Samsung in close second. That’s also the same position both brands have in terms of total mobile marketshare.
“Overall, smartphones shipment for the India market showed an impressive growth of 21.4% over the previous quarter and 51.5% year-on-year. This helped the segment grow its contribution to the mobile phone shipment to 6.5% in Q3 from 5.6% in Q2.”
“From an operating system (OS) perspective, Android overtook Symbian to emerge as the top platform in India for the first time, with a share of 42.4% of the smartphone market.”
TBH I’m suprised it took this long. Just goes to show how insanely popular Nokia’s brand value is in the subcontinent. They were the most trusted brand for 3 years before slipping to 5th place this year. I’d imagine Android’s going to be the number one smartphone brand in India for a while though, considering all the OEMS pumping out entry level affordable smartphones and tablets here.
