Nokia Maps 3D gets navigation and share, supports Rome & Berlin

Nokia launched their 3D maps back in April, and like everyone else who tried it out, we were blown away by the photo-realistic birds eye view of cities.

The team behind the 3D maps have now added the ability to navigate in the 3D view to search for a local attraction or get directions, and you can also share that place or route with a friend using a link. All in gorgeous photorealistic 3D. Fan-friggin-tastic.

Good ol’ Pino from the Nokia Maps team posted on Nokia Conversations:

A feature you all were asking for was the possibility to search for local attractions, restaurants, and shops, and get directions in the world’s most famous cities in photorealistic 3D views.

Today, we are glad to tell you that this is now possible. And there’s even more!
Luca, our Nokia Maps 3D product manager explains it all in the video above.

If you visit maps.nokia.com you can select ‘3D view’ on the top right ‘Map view’ dropdown menu. The first time you do so, you can install the plugin that unleashes the full graphic potential of your computer.

In the ‘Search’ field you can enter addresses, businesses and point of interests. We find everything for you and you can see it in 3D. You will feel like you were already there. Details such as business hours, pictures, reviews, specials, and ratings are also shown, if relevant.

When you find the place you are looking for, you can obviously plan a route there with walk or drive directions. Everything in 3D.

For more flexibility, you can switch anytime between 3D and 2D views.

Even more fun is when you share a place or a route with your friends, via email, Facebook or Twitter.

For instance, if you have ever wondered what is my favourite walk in Berlin, you can find the answer behind this link and when you click on ‘3D view’ you will feel like you were there.

The Video below gives you a better idea of what is now possible:

The blog post also mentions the entire list of cities supported in 3D view, which apparently now include Rome and Berlin too! The entire list of cities you can view in 3D is:

Barcelona, Berlin (new), Boston, Cape Town, Chicago, Copenhagen, Florence, Helsinki, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Melbourne, Miami, Milan, New York, Oslo, Prague, Rome (new), San Francisco, Stockholm, Sydney, Toronto, Venice and Vienna

As y’all might already know, I’m a huge fan of Nokia Maps, and even bigger fan of the new 3D maps. When I was in London for Nokia World last month, I used the 3D view of London to plan out where I could head to on my photo-walks and it came in immensely useful. I’m still impressed every time I use it. Needs a broadband connection though.
