Today we are reviewing the Lava S12. What makes this device special is that it is Lava Mobiles’ first smartphone. Lava Mobiles’ has traditionally been a company that sells low end devices to the masses, differentiating on features like Dual SIM, Dual Memory Card Slot etc. They have taken a bold step and decided to build a lower-mid-range smartphone, the S12. Going for Android as the choice of Operating System was a logical one, but meant the market was already extremely crowded with tons of almost identical devices.
Though it runs 2.2 Froyo, Lava has overhauled the software and differentiated their phone from the lot by including a ’3D UI’. How well does this hold up and is it just a gimmick? Read on to find out!
Unboxing
The S12 has a sleek, attractive packaging. It is on the larger side thought, with more and more companies going for smalled, thinner packaging in an effort to be more eco-friendly. Here’s what you get out of the box:
The Phone
USB to microUSB Cable
USB to DC-IN Adapter to charge from plug points
Handsfree Unit with Mic
Leather Magnetic Pouch to carry the device
Manuals to help familiarize you with the device
2GB microSD Card
The leather pouch fits well and doesn’t take up too much space. It even has holes for the phone speakers so you don’t miss a call. Its good enough for you not to have to worry about looking for third party cases for your phone.
The Device
Lava has paid attention to aesthetics and made one sleek device. The S12, on first lo0k, looks like a Sony Ericsson device. It looks like a smaller version of the SE Arc.
Front
The phone packs a 3.2 inch HVGA Screen with 480*320 pixels and Capacitive Touch. Above the screen are the proximity sensors and the earpiece. Below it are four hardware Android keys: Back, Options, Home and Search. The keys are slim and tapering toward both ends. Below the keys is the microphone. The bottom chin seems a bit oversized given the size of the screen.
Back
The back of the device is almost entirely taken by a hazel-brown back panel. This panel is made of a mini-leather-like material and is really a joy to touch. It feels somewhat similar to the back panel of the original HTC Desire. Definitely a very high end feel. The back also has the speaker grille, and a 5 MP (fixed focus) camera.
Left
The left hand side houses a Lock/Power Key and Volume Up/Down keys. The entire side is silver in color and is a good contrast to the black and brown.
Right
The right hand side is choc full of ports. First you have the standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Below that are the microSD and microUSB slots. Both are protected by a set of flaps. The flaps come off easily and aren’t flimsy. Below that is the dedicated Camera Key (!) which is always welcome. It is a one stage key with only one level.
Top & Bottom
Since the device’s design is such that it tapers on both ends to a point, there is nothing on the top or the bottom.
Popping open the back cover reveals a Lava branded 1300mAh battery. Battery Life is pretty much average and should make it through the day. Under that is housed the SIM Card slot.
Hardware
Internals:
The S12 is powered by:
An ARMv6 Qualcomm 7227 processor clocked at 600Mhz.
It also has a Qualcomm Adreno 200 GPU.
Magnetic Sensor
Accelerometer/Orientation Sensor
Proximity Sensor
Light Sensor
120MB Internal Memory with a microSD Slot upto 32GB
256MB RAM
GSM Quad band 850/900/1800/1900MHz, UMTS 2100MHz
3G, HSDPA 7.2 Mbps/ HSUPA 384kbps
Bluetooth 2.1
Wifi b/g
GPS and A-GPS
The 600MHz CPU is in line with year old devices like the LG Optimus One, but somewhat underpowered given 800Mhz has become the standard in the range the S12 competes with nowadays.
Camera
The S12 has a 5MP Camera for stills and can record video in VGA Resolution. There is a dedicated Camera Key for fast access to the camera application. Sadly, the camera is a letdown because it is a fixed focus camera.
You cannot adjust where you want to focus. This makes macros/closeups nigh impossible. It also results in a lot of blurry shots. Here are some sample untouched images. Click on them to open them in a larger size
We wish Lava would have downed the pixel to say a 3.2 MP Camera and given it a focusing mechanism.
Video recording is capped at 640*480 VGA, which is just about acceptable.
Multimedia
The S12 has standard Android 2.2 offerings when it comes to multimedia.
There is the usual Android Gallery, with support for Picasa Web Albums. There is also FM Radio support, though you have to plus in earphones to act as an antenna.
The default Android music player is present, with support for Mp3,Midi,AMR,WAV,AAC formats. You can also set any song as your ringtone. Lava has also preinstalled the TuneWIki music player.
This features a better UI and add Track Recognition, so you can recognize the track that is playing around you, like Shazam.
The default Android Video Player is present with its uninspired UI and lack of support for .avi and .mkv. However, the popular freeware video player MPlayer installed and ran sucessfully. After downloading the necessary codecs, it was able to play standard 480p 350MB .AVI files relatively smoothly. However, anything 720p and above will naturally not play.
User Interface
This is where the Lava S12 excels. The company decided to do away with the stock Android experience. Luckily, they did not add their own proprietory interface like MotoBLUR, which only ends up slowing down the device. Instead, they hired the best. SPB is a well known brand and their SPB Shell 3D is a great homescreen replacement. The SPB Shell 3D app used to cost $29 and now still costs $15. Lava has tied up with them and brought in SPB Shell 3D as the only User Interface.
Here’s a Video of SBP Shell in action. Be sure to watch the whole thing.
On the S12, the same UI is present. Here are a couple of screen grabs.
Each tile is animated and place in a carousel, and can be picked up and placed in any order one wishes.
The whole experience is smooth, without lag or hiccups.
When clicking on the Messaging Widget, one is given a 3D view of recent text messages. The same holds true for the call log widget. All very flashy.
World Time is also shown, with an animated, rotating Globe.
There is a Flickr Widget which shows you all the top pictures from Flickr. You can download, view in browser and even set these pictures as your wallpaper directly from the widget.
We found the dialler to be the best looking Android Dialler we have ever used! It is functional, with Smart Dialling support. This means dialling 4663 would bring up the ‘Home’ contact and is a nice addon. All Android diallers don’t have Smart Dialling.
The Swipe Down notification bar too has been customized, similar to CM7 and TouchWiz, and allows you quick access to features like WiFi and Brightness.
SPB Shell performed a lot better than we thought. We initially expected that a 3D interface on a 600Mhz Processor would be a pain. However, it held up admirably and navigating wasnt a problem. That being said, if someone loads up a lot of background applications, the phone will very easily start to hang as it won’t be able to handle the graphics intensive UI plus a lot of background processes.
To give some sort of indication to the performance of the S12, we ran the popular benchmarking App, Quadrant. Note that this is in no way definitive, but just gives a general indication.
It scored 408 points overall, which is somewhat acceptable. Not the Ra.One advertisement underneath the test results :p
Text Input
The S12 comes with popular SlideIt keyboard pre-installed. This is a skinnable keyboard with functionality similar to Swype: ie: one can drag their fingers over the letters to make a word.
We found typing in Portrait Mode to be too inaccurate to swipe and type, but it worked well in Landscape Mode. There is also the stock FroYo keyboard present.
Other Standard Features
The newest version of the Android Market is present.
The usual Android File Manager can be found. There is also a partially skinned Calculator present
Contacts and Messaging too are standard Android affairs.
Connecting the device to the PC lets you Sync Contacts or Calendar, or go into Mass Storage Mode.
Note that there is also USB Tethering and Wifi Hotspot support and they both work fine.
Web Browsing is the normal Android default browser. However, there is not flash support. This is understandable as it would choke up the device.
Games
We fired up Angry Birds Seasons, and the game chugged along. It wasn’t the best experience, but was borderline playable.
PreInstalled Software Range aka Why We Would Recommend This Device
The S12 comes with a range of preinstalled apps. Before you groan and try to find out how easily you can remove them, which you easily can btw, know that for once, the preinstalled 3rd part apps are actually useful and add to the experience!
Saavn – Free Easy-On-Bandwidth Music Streaming
An App called Saavn comes preinstalled. This lets you search for any Indian/Bollywood music and stream it for free on your device. It has support for playlists, so you can just select a bunch of songs and keep it running in the background.
We were impressed with the wide range of music they offered. Pretty much everything, even really old music, was found. You could also choose which quality you wanted, depending on whether you were on 2G, 3G or WiFi.
Zenga TV – Live and Prerecorded TV and Movie Streaming
Lava gives you a free One Year Subscription to a service called Zenga TV. This lets you stream a variety of TV Shows, News and Movies. It detects if you are on 2G, 3G or WiFi and adjusts quality accordingly. We tried a bunch of shows and they all worked.
Nimbuzz – Multi Platform IM
Nimbuzz hardly needs an introduction. It offers IM support for pretty much every service out there. This comes pre installed on the S12
ngpay – M-Commerce
Popular Indian M-Commerce service ngpay has an application pre installed. This is similar to Nokia’s Nokia Money.
Markets on Mobile by MoneyControl
This is an app that lets you keep track of the Indian financial and stock markets.
You can search for individual companies too, and see their performance and recent news about them. Definitely useful to have.
Lava Dealer/Service Center Locator
Need to talk to a Lava service center? There’s an app for that. You can locate any Lava Dealer in India, and get address and contact information straight from the app.
Times of India
The TOI Android App comes preinstalled.
Who This Device Is Targetted At
When we booted the S12 for the first time, it came straight to the Home Screen. It did not ask us to Sign In to our Google Account. This is unlike most other Android devices, where everything is Google Centric.
This is a smart move, because Lava has realized that a large part of their demographic will never use GMail, will never log into the Market and download Apps and Games, and will just use the phone out of the box. Moreover, a large number of their customers probably don’t even have Google Accounts. Until a ‘tech savvy’ nephew installs games for them, they use the phone the way it is.
If you look at the S12, you can play any Indian Music, stream almost any Indian TV Show and a wide range of Movies, keep up to date with News, transfer money via your mobile, chat on IM and find your phone’s dealer all out of the box from your device. In short it is nOOb proof!
Conclusion
In summary, the following adjectives can be given to the Lava S12:
Gorgeous, Well-Thought-Out, Sluggish-At-Times.
The software team behind the device did a great job and the 3rd Party App offerings are impressive. However, we wish they had added a better processor into the mix as it would greatly improve everything.
Yet, for the company’s first smartphone offering, a fine effort.
Is the device for you? Well, if you enjoy a lot of custom foolery, want to root your device, take it to the limit this probably is not the device for you. If you want a good looking, well built device and are on a budget, we would recommend the Lava S12.
The Lava S12 has an MRP of Rs. 9999, but can be bought in the Market for Rs. 8200. It comes in Black and Brown. Here’s a Flipkart link for the S12.
