What can I say, the Camera is the first thing I try out on a new device. When we had our hands on the Nokia Lumia 800 last week, I figured that I might take it for a little spin around London to see how the camera fares.

Since the Lumia 800 is basically the same hardware as the Nokia N9 (and exactly the same camera hardware), the results are pretty much identical to the Nokia N9′s camera samples. Ofcourse, since the 800 runs Windows Phone Mango (read our review here for an idea of it), there are very limited scene modes and options to tinker with (basically just the usual set of options on all Mango devices) so you dont really have as much creative freedom to get the shot you want, compared to the N9 and it’s multiple scene modes and settings. You can however, save your camera settings, which is a huge deal in my opinion.
With that all in mind, here’s a couple camera samples from the Nokia Lumia 800.

==================
So as you can see in the images and videos above, the camera on the Nokia Lumia 800 is pretty decent. Just like the N9, it’s above average, but it’s no Nokia N8. The lack of a lens cover though, means you tend to get finger grease on the lens occasionally, because of the placement of the camera on the back. Another issue I had on the 800, just like on the N9, was that sometimes it focused almost instantly. But at times it took a while. Similarly with colors, sometimes it was right on cue, but often images turned out a bit gloomy.
Versus the N9, I was to say, the addition of a dedicated camera key means its a lot more usable in everyday scenarios. The final verdict? Pretty much the best camera on a Windows Phone out there, that’s for sure. Heh, but that’s not saying much is it? Compared to most mobile phones out there though, I’d stick with saying its decent, and above the usual camera-phone quality, but unlike the N8 this probably wont replace your point-and-shoot camera. Bring on the Nokia Windows Phone Camera flagship, I say!
What do you think? Expected better camera sample results out of the 800?
