The Nokia Lumia 800 was probably the most popular announcement at Nokia World 2011 last week.
The unibody touchscreen phone boasts way better specs than the Nokia 710, with a better 3.7 Inch Clearblack AMOLED screen, a 1.4 Ghz processor, 16GB of storage and an 8 Megapixel Camera with an F/2.2 lens for better low light pictures.
Apart from that though, it’s almost exactly the same as the Nokia N9, except that there’s a smaller screen to make way for the three touch-sensitive windows keys, and its still WVGA AMOLED Pentile Matrix (aww) Clearblack display (woo!) tech. The placement of the Windows Keys also means that the front facing camera had to be removed unfortch. There’s a camera key thrown in too, and all that makes for a very sleek little smartphone, and arguable is the best looking Windows Phone so far. If noone had ever seen the Nokia N9, it would probably have been the best looking phone, period.
We’ve reviewed Windows Phone Mango before, and that’s basically the software side of things here. There’s no custom skin on top, or any other customizations and on that 1.4 Ghz single core cpu, things are crazy fast though, and there are a couple Nokia-exclusive apps that give their devices more of an edge than the competition Windows phones. Nokia’s popular free turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation, and their new MixRadio online streaming service. Windows Phone also lets you use about 25GB of free SkyDrive storage for images and audio tracks.
Apart from that, the camera is pretty good. The 8 Megapixel camera with the F/2.2 lens means good low-light shots, though it’s no Nokia N8. There’s a bit of noise, but colors/contrast are pretty good. You can check out our Nokia Lumia 800 Camera Samples post for more info on that. The Nokia Windows Phone is already shipping, and should be available in stores in select countries next week onwards (It’s going on sale on the 16th here in London in Black, with the Pink and Blue colors available on the 20th-ish).
Here’s a video overview of the Nokia Lumia 800 by the Nokia Product Manager at Nokia World 2011:
Jeff, you solved one of my biggest doubts about Zune Player and Nokia Music with that last question... kudos for you! :)
