Nokia India launches ’3rd Eye’ Traffic Management project with Gurgaon Police

Nokia India has partnered with the Gurgaon Traffic Police to launch a traffic management project in the city, called ‘3rdEYE‘.

The project hopes to leverage technology to curb traffic problems, and will be implemented in the East, West and Highway traffic zones at the starting phase. A Nokia E5 will be used along with integrated software called “Tselina“, from a company named Denave, which will help capture and report traffic rule violators. 300 Traffic police personnel will be stationed at different locations equipped with the ’3rdEYE’ and 50 traffic marshals have been give a Nokia E5 each, with the “Tselina” software integrated, to allow them to catch photo evidence like a license plate or drivers face, along with geo-location and time stamps, which will be uploaded onto a server to keep a permanent record of the violation and used as evidence later.

Suresh Vedula, director Enterprise Sales, Nokia India said:

“3rdEYE runs on Nokia E5 handsets, one of our most successful smartphones in the country. The mobile handset running the software will enable traffic marshals to record an offence and upload it real time. The application, developed by Denave, is extremely easy to use on the Nokia E5. The pilot has been extremely successful and we, along with Denave, hope to evolve this technology further. This is a great example of local authorities and the community coming together to use technology as an enabler”

Uhhh… yeah. Gurgaon and Delhi are definitely clusterfu*ks of traffic, and hopefully this will help with the situation. What would be fun, would be to see if this damages Nokia India’s reputation, in the country that’s voted it their most trusted brand 3 years in a row. I see less and less people using Nokias here these days, and if it gets the “Policeman’s phone” reputation I’m not entirely sure that’ll be a good thing. Also, so much for Eseries being just for business folks eh?

Meh. Whatchy’all think? Should Nokia be getting into local police ‘bizznizz‘?
