What exactly is Digital Convergence???

There are some words which automatically make you look cool in the *Geek World* once said, and one such word always right on top is CONVERGENCE!
Well, I will not talk about convergence in life at a Macro level, but I will talk about Digital Convergence here. Gadgets are breaking boundaries every day. Specifications are getting defined with every single device. The LG Motorola Atrix is a shining example where hardware definition of a phone and a laptop gets blurred. (Atrix is recently being showcased at CES right now and is not available for sale). So where is it all taking us and how much do you need in your hands?
It’s the quest for convergence. It’s the quest for that one device that obliterates the need of carrying multiple electronics devices to take care of a human’s daily usage. When you are carrying on with your normal day to day life, you are surrounded with so many gadgets around you that what you need in a phone becomes vague.
You know what’s convergence in a device to me is? Let’s take an example. My sister’s comes to Pune, India on a visit. She stays for a week and then we go to drop her to Thane over the weekend. I come to know I have 2 days leave in office. I stay over. I have no device, no charger (save for my car charger), no gadgets and 4 days of outing.
Now I am a working professional at a (with all my modesty) post which is crucial and may require me on call, on mail 24*7. Mails are of paramount importance to me. Strike One.
I only have my car charger and I can charge my phone through that method only for a tolerable period. Long battery life is paramount. Strike Two.
My daughter loves the sea and we would for sure go to beaches et al. My brother in law will take some awesome pics with his Nikon D90 and ultimately all those pics would make way to me also but at that moment, I would want to take some pics through my phone also. Decent Camera is a must. Strike Three.
I am sure you’re getting the point and be assured that I got the point of not going through all my strikes. ;)
The point is, when you are limited, extremely limited, your needs start getting defined one by one and you know that the phone which does it all is the truly converged device for you. And believe me, no one device can do it all. But few devices can do most of it and they are pushing the boundaries of convergence.
I am living a converged life currently with my E72! Doesn’t do all but does most of it!! Hope you are carrying yours!
Yeah! Getting the point... Convergence has to be more than putting more functionality to phones. One place where I hope to see convergence is Cars where Travel & Communications will converge
