French tablet manufacturer Archos is pissed y’all. Apparently the French Government is moving towards applying a Private Copy Tax to any tablets running Android and iOS.
The “Copie Privée” levy is applied to sales of blank writable media, in the assumption that it’ll be used to infringe copyright. Almost 75 percent of the funds are distributed to French writers, and producers. Now the Government is thinking of imposing the same levy on Tablets with more than 40GB of storage onboard, which could mean prices could increase by about €12. Media Players and Cellphones are already under the levy. For some weird reason Windows 7 Tablets arnt under the levy though, so they’re exempt from the Tax. Only devices “provided with an operating system for mobile devices” are under the tax, which includes Android and iOS. Windows is considered a Desktop OS, so its not counted..
So understandably, Archos is quite pissed, and claims that this unfairly targets French tablet manufacturers for extra taxation.
