BlackBerry PlayBook Battery Life Supposedly Terrible, Defended by RIM

Shaw Wu, an analyst at Kaufman Brothers, has said that the battery life on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet isnt too great, saying theres only “a few hours” worth of battery life out of it.

As a result, he thinks the launch might be pushed to March or May from the previous Febuary date. Wu goes on to say “Keep in mind that QNX wasn’t originally designed for mobile environments but rather for devices like network equipment and automobiles where battery life isn’t as much a constraint”. Bad news for RIM’s first tablet, which runs a new operating system thats built on a company acquired by RIM earlier this year (called QNX), and is supposed to be a multimedia-rich stable OS built for Multi-tasking. The Playbook has a 7 Inch 1024×600 resolution touchscreen, Wifi, 5 Megapixel Rear Camera, with a 3 Megapixel front camera, all running on a dual core 1 Ghz processor, with 1GB of RAM. The battery itself is 5300 mAh, which is more than even the Galaxy Tab.

As a result, RIM has come out to defend their new tablet, saying:

“Any testing or observation of battery life to date by anyone outside of RIM would have been performed using pre-beta units that were built without power management implemented. RIM is on track with its schedule to optimize the BlackBerry PlayBook’s battery life and looks forward to providing customers with a professional grade tablet that offers superior performance with comparable battery life.”

With CES just around the corner, we wont have to wait too long to see what those numbers are.
