Nokia Explains their Strange New Device-Naming Conventions

Apart from announcing the new Nokia C2-01 and X2-01, Nokia also explained their new device-naming conventions in a blog post today.

As you might know, with devices like the C1-00, C1-01, C1-02 and C6-00, C6-01, etc, everyone pretty much agrees that the new model numbers are insanely hard to remember, or even talk about in conversation.

Just a quick reminder about Nokia’s device-naming conventions. The letter indicates which product range the device belongs to. Cseries devices are aimed at those for whom cost is the most important factor when it comes to buying a phone. Xseries is geared towards youth and has an emphasis on music. (Eseries is aimed at business users and Nseries, the smartphone connoisseurs).

The numbers gives an indication of the feature set and price, relative to other members of the range. So, a Nokia C2 is going to cost less than a Nokia C3, for example, but won’t offer quite as many features.

The numbers will be re-used as the range develops over time, but their meaning in terms of the range, relative feature set and price remains the same.

Hence a Nokia C2-01 should be better than the Nokia C2-00. But… the C2-01 doesnt have dual Sim support like the C2-00?

Ah i’m confused again.

I have to say it. I hate Nokia’s new naming scheme. It’s impossible to talk about in public with any average person.

I mean imagine a conversation now:

A: “Have you seen the New Nokia C6?”

B: “The Nokia C6-00?”

A: “No the Nokia C6-01″

B: “How is that different from the Nokia C6 Zero Zero”

You get my point.

And to think, some people complained about the old N82, N86, N95, N96, etc names.

Sigh.

What do you think about Nokia’s new Naming Convention? We cant be the only ones that hate it, right?

It seems overly complicated doesnt it! I like the fact with Apple its basically one phone. Thats it, no matter how you plan to use it, its going to work!

This might be the Nokia-fanboi in me, but I don't think that those names are too difficult to understand. At least it's easier to compare that pre to pixi or EVO to Desire to Hero to Mozart or Epig 4G to Galaxy S. Yep, from one point of view it would be clear if it would be without the dash, C600, C601 and so on, but since it is also clear that the naming scheme is model first, iteration second, it makes sense to somehow separate them. For average buyer when he buys a phone C6 tells it's sensible(since it's C, not for media like X or business like E) and for someone who doesn't care for the newest bling but wants to have pretty much all of the features ( it's 6 ). If I liked my old C6 but want a new phone after couple years, I'll go for a new C6. I agree if you say that Nokia should show the whole code better in ads, but seems that they already started doing this. I have seen some ads where there is XY for XY-00 and XY-ZZ for iterations after that.

To say it's silly is wording it too nicely. Something like it's downright stupid is much closer to the truth - idk wth is wrong with Nokia, but they seem like they've been doing things by some totally backwards logic, for too long...and they can't realize it's plain wrong - the reasons for which are just unfathomable for me.

In my opinion naming 'series' should have some similarities - for example, all C6-XX should be sliders, the higher XX number - the newer it should be/more functions it should have
