The last 4 years have seen a huge amount of hype regarding Smartphone-kind. Ofcourse, you have to give credit to the Apple iPhone for some of this hype.

Even the ‘Masses‘ are using Smartphones now. And while Nokia has seen a drop in Global sales, it too, has done pretty well in the Smartphone category. The story has been same for almost all the major cellphone manufacturers.
To add to that, there are many variants available these days. Touch, qwerty, hybrid.
But I Digress. Let’s not get into that. Coming back to the subject.
Does it really matter, Which Smartphone do you use?
Do I hear a lot of ‘Yes!‘? Fine. I am not really a ”typical” geek and I cant really challenge the technical aspects of a phone honestly, if you throw any at me.
I’m just a normal user, a consumer.
A consumer who may not be bothered by the processor speed or the amount of free RAM or the graphic chips or whatever. A consumer who Would simply want his phone to do certain things that it is supposed to do.
Ok, so what Would an average Joe want his ”Smartphone” to do? (And please feel free to add, delete, debate in the comments below)
More or less, most of the users would be using their Smartphones precisely for these most of the time.
Now take all platforms. Almost all major platforms provide all this with aplomb. Each of them would have an edge in any of these. But most importantly, all of them provide all of these!
Cellphone buys get influenced in the second stage of an average Joe’s upgradation. As he gets introduced to the Smartphone World and as he starts using these online services, his needs start getting prioritized. He starts using one or two of the above services more than others. He would still be using all of them but 2 or 3 of them would be such services, where he would not want to compromise in terms of quality and THAT is what decides the mass purchase influence of the Smartphones!
So any Smartphone will sell as long as they provide all of these, with ofcourse one or two being their forte.
All other apps to me, are just add ons.
And to be honest, to an average Joe, ‘Multitasking‘ is just a glamorous word.
So, I dont care what Smartphone you use. As long as you get the above things done, why does it even matter?
Good article.....just goes on to justify why I call my E50 a 'smartphone'!! keep writing...keep winning!!!
Well! This can be extended to stating that the Shirt one is wearing does not matter as long it covers body and the Car one drives does not matter as long as it has 4 wheels and takes you places... and so on. That is one unsaid side of this story, Coming back to phones (or smartphones) most just go by brand, some hype & status feeling. Every smartphone does the job, 90% of users don't use 90% of features, but still it matters which phone you carry around!
Not just chat, but also social networks. VoIP without limits over any data connection including 3G. And "maps" may very well mean "preloaded maps that I can use without having a live data connection, especially when I'm roaming abroad." What about transferring files from your computer to your phone and vice versa without having to use proprietory software like iTunes?
