Hot on the heels of Steve Job’s announcement yesterday that the iPod/iPhone platform holds 50% of the portable gaming market and with the arrival of Apple’s Game Center, we thought it would be fitting to write a quick round-up of the bigger titles heading to the appstore in the coming months.
Here are some of the games we’re excited about:
Sonic 4: Episode 1 - I don’t care which platform this thing comes out on first, be it Xbox, or iPhone. I’ll be buying it. Check out this demonstration footage. But Sega, please, please make sure they fix Sonic’s run animation, it just looks like it takes him too long to pick up speed. One good thing to note is that they’ve included the leg-blur when he’s running at full speed and a decidedly old-school soundtrack can be heard playing in the background. It’s all in the detail don’t you know? I’d expect the price to be around $4.99/£3.99/€4.99 when its available.
Mirrors Edge: EA’s building-hopper comes to iOS devices. The portable version is going to be an exclusively side scrolling affair, as opposed to the free running nature of its console brethren. Still, the control system looks interesting, combining the motion sensing and touch capabilities of the devices. I’d expect the price to be around $3.99/£2.99/€3.99 when its available. It’s up on the appstore now, priced at €3.99/$4.99. Many thanks to Ernest for the tip.
EPIC’s Project Sword: Download EPIC’s tech demo from iTunes, for iPad , iPod and iPhone. It should give you a taste of whats to come. Looking like something straight out of Fable or even Elder Scrolls, this could be one of the most hotly anticipated games for the platform. It sounds, looks and runs absolutely amazingly. Check out further screens (and those dynamic lighting effects) on the Flickr stream. I’d expect pricing to be somewhere in the region of $7.99/£6.99/€7.99 on release.
Epic have made their Unreal SDK tools available to potential games developers looking to beef up their graphics in future games. That can only be a good thing for iOS gaming’s future.
Here’s hoping these titles will integrate with Game Center from day one. We’ll review all of these titles as soon as they become available.. and as soon as I can pry myself away from them!
