Until now, members of the iPhone community have been able to Jailbreak iOS 4.0.1 devices with ease, using a security exploit within the Safari browser code. With such a promising and early start to Jailbreaking on iPhone 4, things were looking peachy as far as hacking future software revisions was concerned. Alas, not all is well in the iPhone hacker community. According to their blog, the iPhone Dev Team have announced that there will not be a Jailbreak for devices running iOS 4.0.2. When asked whether or not there will be a Jailbreak for this software version, the Dev Team offered this response:
No, there won’t be. FW 4.0.2/3.2.2 was *only* released to fix the jailbreakme hole. With FW 4.1 still in its beta stages, it makes no sense to escalate the “cat & mouse” with Apple for FW updates that only fix the jailbreak holes. To quote WOPR, “the only winning move is not to play”.
Ouch. There you have it. The Dev Team seem to feel that “Apple is the only winner from this cat and mouse game”. Whether or not this rules out any budding iPhone dev out there from Jailbreaking iOS 4.0.2, we just can’t say. But this won’t rest well with iPhone users who’ve just recently purchased Apple’s fourth revision of the device containing the latest firmware update. Those of you who are still using iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2G are exempt from this unfortunate turn of events, however.
So for now, Apple can rest easy until their next major firmware update, which will most likely be iOS 4.1. But this news does beg the question, is Apple really the only winner from this cat and mouse game with the Dev Team?
