Super AMOLED vs OLED; What’s the Difference Really?

The Samsung Galaxy S has a pretty freakkin gorgeous Super AMOLED Display.

And there we were thinking the OLED Screen of the ol’ Nokia N86 was good enough. We’ve already spoken about how OLED is way better than Standard TFT displays and all that.

For the whole technical lowdown you can check the Wikipedia articles on OLED and Super AMOLED. However it’s key difference from OLED and AMOLED lies in the way it’s positioned and the design of the display. Standard AMOLED displays have several layers (with a bit of air between them). Samsung’s Super AMOLED displays though, only have one touch-sensitive layer. This is due to due to the removal of the obfuscating touch sensor layer that sits on top of TFT LCD and traditional AMOLED touchscreen displays.

This allows Super AMOLED to have a much higher brightness level (at about 20% more than AMOLED) and even better sharpness since the thickness of the one main layer is just about 0.001 m. All this while keeping the display’s power consumption at the same level as AMOLED.

This tech also helps the display’s behavior under direct sunlight. Infact, the Galaxy S performs almost as well as displays with mirror layers. Definitely top-notch readability under direct sunlight. Even the viewing angle has been improved.

To be honest, these images do not do justice to the screen on the Galaxy S. I just cant describe how marvelous it looks. It is pretty much the best display I’ve seen in a portable device. Ever. Other device displays look quite bleak and lifeless by comparison.

Here’s a video by Samsung showing off what Super AMOLED is in a bit more detail.

So yes, that’s about it then. And yes, I want Super AMOLED on everything.

The AMOLED is brighter but the N86 has better contrast.

You gotta hand it to Samsung! It would take a lot of convincing on any manufacturers part to let go of SAMOLED tech,THIS IS Sammy cashcow;even if BADA fails to gain significant marketshare,Samsung can just make a WP7/Android/S^4 device with this & that instant profit!
