Ye Giant Nokia BH-505 Review

The Nokia BH-505 sure looks like a very slick pair of Bluetooth Stereo Headphones.

Nokia BH-505 Review

Unfortunately though, that might be the only thing going for it. Read on for our Review.

First up, the BH-505 features such specs as:

* Slim, lightweight design
* Digital signal processing (DSP)
* Multiple earpiece types and sizes
* Sweat and splash resistant
* Dedicated call and music keys
* Near Field Communication (NFC)

Unfortunately we could not test that NFC bit, since we didnt have an NFC device around to use with the 505′s.

The spec list is pretty basic, but the fact that it’s sweat and splash resistant would indicate this headset is positioned towards more of the “I’m going for a jog and need to listen to my music” sports crowd. The full specs page is available on the Nokia BH-505 Product Page.

The Retail Package:

Admittedly, the BH-505 retail package isnt the most impressive looking.

Nokia BH-505 Review

There’s just a charger and manual along with it. Also about 3 (x2 ears=6) different types of Ear inlets to make sure you get a correct fit with the BH-505 and your ear.

Ironically though, the fit was our primary problem with the BH-505.

=========

You see, these things have a tendency to keep slipping off.

Nokia BH-505 Review

All around, the BH-505 measures 125 x 137 x 58.5 mm and weighs in at 36 grams. While we initially thought that was ‘light‘, we found that a major portion of that weight is towards the rear of the headset, which meant that the 505 kept ‘slipping’ downwards after a while. As sweat resistant as it might be, perspire even a little bit, and the slipping gets worse.

This gets annoying as I constantly found myself re-adjusting the headset, to get it back into proper alignment every other minute. For a second I thought it was just my head. I never thought I had an oddly shaped head, but the BH-505′s made me suspect that. So I made everyone in my department of my office try on the pair and walk around, and (much to my head’s assurance of its normality), found that it didnt really stay put on anyone’s head.

Nokia BH-505 Review

There’s just too much weight at the rear, as lightweight as the BH-505 may be. To be very honest, it was by far the most uncomfortable pair of Nokia headphones I’ve ever trialled.

The rear of the headset only contains the power button though, which is a smart choice of positioning, as you dont confuse it with the play/pause buttons and switch it off by mistake.

There’s also the charging point, which is quite cleverly hidden under a rubber flap. The Flap closes up well enough, but we sense it getting loose over time.Charging to full battery takes under an hour. We’ve noticed a battery life of about 22 hours with the BH-505 on Full volume with no voice calls in between.

There’s also the indicator LED at the bottom.

Nokia BH-505 Review

As you can see on the left side, the indicator LED is quite small. There’s three light colors to indicate connection: Green, Red and Blue. Green is when the headset is turned on. At that point it will select any previous paired device and try to connect automatically. Blue indicates a successful connection, while a flashing blue indicates the headset is in pair mode (long press the power button). There’s a Red LED to indicate low battery, or to let you know the headset has switched off, when you turn the 505 off. It’s easy enough to pair, and maintains a strong enough connection. No problems there.

So now that we’ve established that the BH-505 isnt very comfortable, let’s move on to the Sound quality. Which, for this headset, is directly proportional to how well it fits you.

Nokia BH-505 Review

You see, while the BH-505′s might look great on you, and might even get you laid at the next Star Trek Convention, the fit is so terrible, that you’ll never really experience much music at all. As you can see from the image above, the BH-505 fits in an over-the-ear+in-ear type design. This means, when the headset slips, and isnt actually in your ear, you dont really get much sound out of it.

Nokia BH-505 Review

When the headset earpieces are actually in your ear, the sound quality is pretty okay, and there’s just a hint of bass around. In-ear type headphones are good at isolation outside sound, which is the same scenario here. But it’s definitely not the best headset we’ve heard, from Nokia.

That covers sound quality and comfort. How about Controls? The BH-505 has it’s playback and voice controls on the face of it’s earpieces.

Nokia BH-505 Review

On the right side of the Nokia BH-505, you have the Play/Pause Key. You’ll also notice the tiny Mic Hole.

Nokia BH-505 Review

There’s also a Rocker-type key at the very end, that can be used for Rewind/Last and Fast-Forward/Next functions.

Nokia BH-505 Review

On the left side, you have the voice button that you can press to answer an incoming voice call, or to make calls of your own.

In this side, the rocker switch is used for Volume increase/decrease.

Now again, while this all looks cool, and might seem like great positioning, it really isnt the smartest.

Because the buttons require some effort to ‘press’. Hence when you do so, it feels like you’re poking something into your ear, which isnt really a nice feeling. At. All.

Conclusion:
[rating:2]

So, admittedly, we were a bit disappointment with the Nokia BH-505. We judged the book, by the cover. But once we opened it up. Egads.

Nokia BH-505 Review

It’s not the most comfortable headset. It’s not the best sounding headset. It doesnt stay on.

It does however, look pretty cool, in our opinion, but that’s the only positive thing we could think of, about the BH-505. That, and the fact that it’s build quality is quite good, with it’s rubber-ish surface.

Recommended? Only if you can stay perfectly still for extended periods of time. Otherwise, why not check out the Nokia BH-214 instead?

Just to give you a better idea of how the Headset looks when worn, here’s a video with our final verdict on the Nokia BH-505 Bluetooth Stereo Headset.

      Thanks for the great review. But did u try wearing them upside down? I think that'll solve the discomfort problem.

    I felt it to be extremely uncomfortable!

    The damn thing doesnt rest! I guess u need to have a retarded suppandi style head for that thing to be usable! Extremely unfortunate for nokia that I dont belong to that category of geekheads (sic) :(

    I'd give it 1 on 5! 1 coz it just works! Just 1 coz the damn thing isnt supposed to be something u're concentrating on when u're doing nothing!

    I can't find anywhere any definitive statement on whether this device has a microphone! There are hints with mentions of voice control but no statements anywhere. Yet without a mic you would have to use the handset anyway to make calls. So, what gives?

    this product has very good design. that does contribute a lot in my decision to buy this product. BUT it does have its own problem. it is being advertise as splash and sweat resistant but it is NOT as many have complaint it on the net. Then many people even myself have problem with detecting this product with PC. TRY THE NET FOR ANSWER!! you get NONE.

    Just a friendly advise that, this thing is not sweat resistance as it advertise. It has been a lot problem if you use it for a sport or jog. The thing will get malfunction and cant power on and need to wait totally dry.

    You're wearing the damn headset wrong, it's tilted back to your neck too far. It's supposed to float slightly behind your head - HENCE IT BEING SO LIGHT. Compared to ALL of the other similar style frame over-the-ear+in-ear around the back of head headsets with earbuds, this one is: A: Extremely light B: Fits better than all the rest C: Has the best controls that are extremely accessible to operate, even the audio cues are great D: I have gone almost 2-3 days without charging the batteries, and listening to the music at a consistent 7 hours a day, plus they charge extremely fast when the batteries are out. E: They pair up to multiple devices, I have this headset paired up to my laptop, my iPad and my iPhone. Simultaneously. No where in my packaging did it say Near Field Communication .. nor would I know what the hell NFC would have anything doing in a headset in the first place. Lastly, there is a microphone, and I must say it's EXTREMELY sensitive. The only thing lacking is a digital frequency filter for background noise removal, but then that might be why the batteries last so long. I think your review is completely biased and only shares one single point of view. I hate Nokia, their phones suck, but this headset is definitely worth it.

      It has NFC support for auto pairing with NFC equipped cell phones.
