One of the cool things about the Nokia X6, is that it comes with Ovi Music Unlimited here in India.
And with that bit of knowledge, we took the service formerly known as “Comes with Music” out for a little test run. A short review or overview of Ovi Music Unlimited, if you will.
When you first turn on your Ovi Music Unlimited Device, it sends off a little text message to the “MyNokia” service. After a couple minutes (Ours came in just under 30 mins), you should, get an Activation Code for Ovi Music Unlimited.
The Text Message told us to keep the code safe, and not share it with anyone, yada yada, which is what we did.
But, after connecting our X6 to our PC, and starting up Ovi Player (which is apparently one of the two required methods of activating OMU), we were never really asked for that code. Once Ovi Player loads up the store, you have to click on “Activate” under Ovi Music Unlimited. At that point, the Ovi Player automatically detected our X6 (we had previously connected it and watched it install under Nokia PC Suite), and proceeded to the next step, where we had to setup our new Ovi Music Unlimited Account.
Unfortunately, it looks like you cant use your current Ovi Music Account with the service. You’re forced to create a new account, which is what we did.
Oh, and incase you were wondering, you cant use that Activation code with any other device, even if it’s another Ovi Music Unlimited Device. Or so I learnt when I sneakingly tried to see if I could use that code to get the Ovi Music Unlimited service activated on my ol’ Nokia N82 and a friends N97 Mini.
Once you create the account and sign in, you have access to all the millions (?) of songs on the Ovi Music Store. Nothing visually changes on the store, since there arnt any prices on the Ovi Music Store India anyway (because of it’s voucher based buying system).
So by concept, the idea is genius. For one year, you have access to a lot of legal music, unlimited downloads, yada yada.
But then that DRM (Digital Rights Management) bit comes into play and messes things up a bit. You see, while all this music is yours to keep, the DRM restrictions means you cannot transfer your music to another device like, say, your iPod or Other Music Player, etc. You cant burn it to CD either.
Also points to note, you cant purchase an “Ovi Music Unlimited” license or subscribe to the service separately. The only way to get in, is by purchasing an OMU compatible device. Then you get unlimited access to the Ovi Music Store for one year. At the end of that year, your subscription ends, and there’s no way to extend your subscription (yet). But you get to keep all the music you downloaded. If, for some strange reason you delete, or lose one of those tracks, you can re-download it within a 3 year period of the subscription ending.
You can only register one PC at a time, with one OMU device. And there doesnt seem to be Mac support for Ovi Player either (yet). But, technically, you can do everything via your phone, if need be. And just FYI, the tracks are in .Wma format at 196 kbps.
You can also Bluetooth OMU tracks from One OMU device to another, but you cant do the same, with a non-OMU ‘Average Joe’ device.
But like I said, by theory, the whole concept of Ovi Music Unlimited is pretty great. If you only listen to music on your Nokia and on your PC, and you have access to a decent enough Internet connection, Ovi Music Unlimited can be your gateway to millions of Legal Music all waiting for you. The selection of music on the Store is pretty good, albeit to say their top 10 lists were outdated, would be an understatement. That being said, Ovi Music does manage to get the latest releases most of the time. I’ve downloaded music I would never have paid for, just because I could, and because I wanted to see what that song was like. The ability to try out new music without any actual costs is the most innovative aspect of Ovi Music Unlimited, atleast in our opinion.
However if you listen to music on a multitude of different devices, Ovi Music Unlimited should not be the reason why you purchase a phone. It’s still a nice “extra” feature to have though.
What?….We’re just saying!
Here’s a short video Overview of Ovi Music Unlimited on the Nokia X6. Just to give you a better idea of how the service works.
Do you have a question about Ovi Music Unlimited? Something we missed? Do let us know in the comments section below y’all!
Unfortunately, no. Infact I dont think I've seen an Eseries Ovi Music Unlimited or Comes with Music device before to be honest.
Hello,Thanks for the really authentic and informative post on Ovi Music. Does the licence also come with E71? Most of the retailers are clueless about how the Ovi Music functions. I think in other countries it is free with E Series Nokia too. Let me know.
I don't recall you stating what countries this service is available for as most countries do not have Ovi Unlimited. It's all a but too if you're using a N900. All that Ovi Music you bought with your E-Series or older N-Series devices is worthless now.
you cant use existing ovi account? after forced to have separate accounts when nokia music store became ovi music store in India, I just cant understand why Nokia does such stupid things. Do they want to just maximize numver of ovi accounts to show to their bosses? This is complete joke.Integration is already missing from Nokia's OVI services and still they doing all this.
