Remember the Nokia N900? That phone that was announced 10 months ago, that we reviewed 6 months ago.
Oh yes that phone.
Nokia India has finally decided that we are worthy of it’s presence, and released it here.
The problem is, it’s going to sell at Rs 30,639 (approx US$655). That’s almost 150$ more than the launch/current price of the N900 elsewhere. Ridiculous.
My annoyance with Nokia wasnt that they took almost 10 months to get the device here. Oh no.
It wasnt even that the launch event that we attended, didnt seem very exciting as we sat there for an hour listening to the same things we’ve already heard about the N900, listening to the very typical PR “give-you-set-of-words-that-relate-to-your-question-but-dont-really-answer-it” statements that were made, and noting down how absolutely nothing new was said.
No it wasnt any of that.
It’s the fact that Nokia is bringing in 10 month old hardware into the Indian Market, then charging a huge premium over it, while telling people that it’s “Brand New“. Oh wait yes you’re right, it is “brand new to India”, I forgot how I mentioned earlier in this post that it just took 10 months to finally reach here </sarcasm>.
The Indian N900 doesnt even have Skype integration but we were told this was a “legal restriction“. Yup. Just like how we never got Ovi or Flickr to appear in our Share Online all these years. “Legal Restrictions“. Fine, we’ll give you that Nokia, there’s nothing you can do about that sort of thing then. Oh and it’s on PR1.2, so yay I guess.
And at this point with the recently announced N8 so close by, I dont know what to tell people who ask me which one to buy. The Indian N900 is too expensive right now and comes handicapped^ ever so slightly. I can only hope that the N8 ships at a normal price and Nokia doesnt thinker with the firmware for India.
I’ve grown painfully used to these poor shows by Nokia India. And I’m sorry to say I’m quite fed up of it.They say India’s their Second largest market, and then they bring phones here one year later. Ridiculous.
I dont even want to think of how long the N8 might take to arrive here. Though I’ll gladly eat my words up if it does reach on time.
For those of you who are interested, you can pick up an Indian N900 for 30,639 Indian Rs starting June 11th in “Select” Nokia Stores. Hopefully that price should drop fast. Once it does, it’ll actually inch closer to being “worth it”. And no, I have no idea which stores Nokia has “selected”.
Nokia launched the N900 in India. And we just sat there. Blinking.
hi frnz, rite now m using iphone 3g but now i want to change it. so plz tell me, is N900 really a gud phone?? m a bit confused!! m worried about nokia’s HANGING problem, as this occurs most in N97!! or suggest me sum other phone in range of 25,000 INR.reply awaited…
i checked with a south delhi dealer.. this guy quoted me something around 27k... seems like dealers will have a better deal than the MRP i guess. :) have heard it will come further down by 1-2 k in next couple of weeks.
N900 is a truly multitasking phone for me personally speaking. i don't really care when it launches.. but i am happy that it finally has. at the end of the day, i will be able to play around with it and that's what matters..
@cj i have bee saying same thing along with many other bloggers.Nokia India is really not doing things right.I think heads should roll on im Nokia India for this.they are clearly loosing lower end and may be higher end too.there phone release in india is pathetic, look at E52,N900.so many other phones they just havent released. Bunch of jokers. Its pain to see Nokia doing that.it will drive away most loyal users too.
