We got our grimy hands on the Nokia Holder Easy Mount HH-12 and Nokia Universal Holder CR-39 a couple days ago.
And here’s a quick overview of it. Just incase y’all would be interested.
The first thing about the HH-12 and CR-39 that caught our attention, was how large the retail box was.
Its large enough to make it kinda feel like you’ve bought a phone. But you havent. Just so you know.
The fact that the box says “Easy Self Installation” and “Screwless attachment to car windscreen” does inspire a bit of confidence that setting this thing up would be easy enough. And as we found out, it really was.
Open up the box and you’ll find the Nokia Holder Easy Mount HH-12 and Nokia Universal Holder CR-39 all wrapped up.
Surprisingly there’s a installation guide manual that’s in almost every single language imaginable. Took me a while to find the English part of it. Heh.
Admittedly when I first saw the HH-12 and CR-39, I thought I just might be in over my head here. But like the box said, installation is easy enough.
The Nokia Universal Holder CR-39 isnt much of a looker to be honest.
But the fact that it can adapt and hold almost any device is a big advantage.
The Holder is attached to the Mount via a screw.
There’s markings on the back to make sure it lines up properly with the mount.
Now while the CR-39 is said to be “universal” I’m pretty sure a device of N900 size, would not be able to fit in there.
Unfortunately I did not have one around to test out this theory. The Nokia X6, E52 and N97 Mini fit in fine. The E72 did not, because it was too wide.
The Nokia Holder Easy Mount HH-12 looks like a prop out of a star trek episode or something.
The Mount has a (quite powerful) suction ..uhh… cap thingy at the bottom, which would be the part you attach to your car windshield or dashboard.
To help the mount get a better grip, there’s a kind-of lock mechanism at the side.
Once you place the mount on a surface, and turn the lock on, the suction cap gets a tighter hold on the surface (again, provided it is flat).
Apart from that the Mount also has knobs at the side to loosen the holding structure, for you to adjust the angle of the holder to how you’d want it. You have to remember to tighten the knob when done.
The Mount has the same marks for the Holder (which unfortunately means the HH-12 can only be used with the CR-39 and no other holders), so that it lines up with it correctly.
Once you have them lined up, you have to use a screw (included in the package) to make sure they’re both fixed to each other properly.
The screw goes into a well hidden hole in the Holder, and then screws into the Mount.
This hole is hidden by a soft “Nokia” branded plug-of-sorts, thats fits in nicely.
Very minor but neat touch.
Once you follow all the above instructions, the entire unit should, hopefully, look something like this.
Keep in mind, that using those knobs we spoke about earlier on, you can adjust the mount to your liking. As such, you can keep the Holder fixed straight, or perpendicular, etc.
From there, you can place your device in the holder.
The fit is adjustable, as we mentioned before, so it’s not a problem when you place it in portrait.
However, the slight problem arises when you place it in landscape.
As is evident from the image above, while one side of the device is supported in landscape mode, the other side isnt.
As a result, I was quite worried that my device might just…. well… slide out from that side and fall out. However, the fit of the unit is snug enough, so that kind of scenario probably wont happen. Not unless you take your car off-road or something.
The top and bottom halves of the holding mechanism have a soft material inside, so as not to create any scratches on your device, while keeping it snug in place.
We took the whole unit for a test ride in a friends car, and it actually worked pretty great. While I was a bit worried about the weight of the Holder, mount and device, the unit stayed stuck on (via the suction cup) very firmly in place, and never really ‘fell‘ off or anything at any point.
So is this the best combination device car holder ever?
Maybe. I’d say it’s the best unit we’ve reviewed, but then again we’ve only checked out one other Nokia Car Holder Kit before.
