What does this mean exactly? Well according to the post on Nokia Conversations, this latest venture will see improvements to email, instant messaging, maps and navigation services.
As part of the alliance Nokia will be the exclusive provider of Yahoo!’s maps and navigation services, branded as “powered by Ovi.” Nokia brings its ample experience in top-drawer, location-based products and maps to Yahoo!’s users. In turn, Yahoo! will become the exclusive global provider of Nokia’s Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services, branded as “powered by Yahoo!.” Yahoo! brings its expertise in world-class internet offerings to the table for Ovi users.
And that’s not all apparently. Users will eventually also be able to use their Ovi ID with certain Yahoo services.
Changes will also come in the form of Nokia and Yahoo! working together to improve access to a number of services. Initially, users with an Ovi ID will be able to unlock a myriad of handy internet and handset-based goodness from both partners. Some of the pain involved in trying to remember which of your hundreds of passwords you used may soon be over.
The collaboration will see benefits to both Yahoo! and Nokia in the fact that Nokia will be able to engage with Yahoo!’s millions of users, particularly in the U.S. and vice versa. Ovi Mail regulars will be able to tap into new experiences and it’ll extend Yahoo!’s reach in emerging markets.
Here’s a brief video where Tero Ojanpera (Executive Vice President, Services, Nokia) and Jason Titus (Vice President, Communications Products, Yahoo!) discuss why the partnership makes sense and what it means.
To be quite honest, this does seem like it will benefit both companies here.
But on the other hand, I’ve personally never been a big fan of Yahoo’s services. I dont know anyone with an active Yahoo account, and I havent signed into Yahoo Messenger since the late 90s. I’ve been a Flickr user before Yahoo bought them, and now that’s the only Yahoo service I really use. Hey, maybe Nokia will do something with Ovi Share and Flickr, eh? We can hope.
