We’ve had the Nokia E52 for little bit over a week here on ZCJ.
And here’s our impressions so far.
What we liked:
3G (HSPA), WiFi (b/g), EGPRS and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity. Check.
Symbian 3rd Edition OS is very stable by now. Very fast and has a bit of transition effects here and there too.
A-GPS with Free Ovi Maps Navigation.
600 Mhz processor means this phone is seriously fast and responsive.
Gorgeously slim at just 116 x 49 x 9.9 mm.
Great Build Quality, in a very light chassis. The finish on the back panel is especially pleasant to touch.
Weighs only 98g.
Standard 3.5mm Audio Jack means you can plug in any pair of standard headphones. Win!
Great call quality, like most Nokia devices.
Full Office Support, like all Eseries devices. Adobe Reader for pdfs, QuickOffice v5.3 for Excel Sheets, Word Documents, and Powerpoint Presentations.
Has all the Eseries Software extras that you’ve come to know and love. Type-to-get-contact
A BP-4L 1500 mAh battery powers the E52. With Moderate to Heavy usage it lasted almost 2 days. This is with :
About 2-3 hours of GPS.
3 hours worth of calls.
Backlight on maximum brightness.
30 Minutes of Music.
About 30 minutes of GPRS/Edge usage.
Email check though Wifi and GPRS every one hour.
30 minutes of Installing Apps or Texting (where the screen was constantly on).
The E52 will basically sail through a day of moderate usage. We’re really pleased with the Battery life.
Strangely though, I couldnt help thinking that somehow I got more battery life out of the E72 than I did with the E52, which I know, technically doesnt make sense since both use the same battery and the E72 has a larger screen and a few more features. Guess we’ll have to see if this changes by the time we do our final review.
What we werent too sure about :
Standard T9 keypad. It’s one of the best I’ve used, but it’s SO hard to get used to one after months of using Qwerty. Still some would prefer this.
It’s already pretty old considering it’s been released in the rest of the world for about a year now.
2.4″ QVGA screen is nice and bright. Though, that being said, it would be considered quite small for web browsing and a couple other things by today’s standard.
Dpad is slightly stiff to operate.
The E52 has Call and End Call keys, but they are not colored in green and red as usual but in plain white, on black. The lack of this color differentiation makes it harder to recognize the call management buttons fast, especially for first time users.
Has a Dedicated Camera Key, but it takes a while to start up the app.
Only comes with a 1GB microSD in Retail Package. At a time when phones are coming with 32GB and 16Gb of onboard space, and even budget phones come with a 4GB microSD, this seems a bit too less. To add to that, there’s only about 50Mb of Phone memory available.
What we didnt like :
3.2 MP camera with standard Nokia lens has no Auto-Focus. It does have a single LED flash though, for some reason. Dont expect to take any award winning pictures with this one, though it does a pretty decent job for everyday pics.
No TV-Out but this has never been a feature on Eseries anyway.
No podcasting or internet radio applications
Only 2 One-Touch Keys: Calendar and Messaging. Both can be set as shortcuts to different applications on a short and long press basis, which means you actually have 4 different shortcuts. However for some strange reason, you cant set just any application as a shortcut, as some just dont appear choose-able on the list.
==============
Here’s a brief video of our First Impressions :
At the end of the day, the Nokia E52 is a nice, no-fuss device that will easily last through a day and a half’s usage. It’s slim package with it’s mostly steel and hard plastic finish is very attractive to use.
The only drawback to this device for me, was the camera to be honest. Otherwise the T9 keyboard is livable, and everything else about this particular Eseries device is stable and fast. Let’s see if that changes by our final review, eh?
