As much as we wanted to avoid saying the “i” word since the iPad’s launch a couple days ago, we couldnt help bring it up for this one.
The iPad has gotten some neat tablet-friendly versions of a couple websites, one of which is Gmail. Yesterday, Google rolled out a nice new two-pane Gmail interface for tablets like the iPad, and the N900.
And again, there’s a nice little trick you can use to get the iPad version of sites like Gmail, working on the N900. Y’know, if you’re bored of the full version working on your N900. It goes without saying, that these sites are mostly made for portrait view (so just put your N900′s browser in portrait when needed), and will no doubt look a bit cramped in the N900′s smaller screen.
But hey, it’s possible and here’s how you do it. Similar to our trick to get the Android version of Google Buzz working on the N900, you’ll have to use the User Agent Switcher for this one.
- Install Hide User Agent from Application Manager
- Go to Control Panel and open Hide User Agent
- Set user agent to
Mozilla/5.0(iPad; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/531.21.10 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.4 Mobile/7B314 Safari/531.21.10- Click on the Set
- Then the browser will be restarted
- Now go to the browser, and navigate to, and log into Gmail
And that’s all there is to it !
Ofcourse, we didnt have an N900 around to test this out since we gave our trial unit back, and it’s all theory for now. Anyone willing to give it a go and get back to us ? Let us know in the comments below y’all !
If you'd like to see the screenshots , they are posted at http://senseapplied.com/index.php/ipad-style-we...CNN version does not work in Pakistan so can't check it out but NYT is working great
It doesn't work very well. Like Google Maps for Mobile on the N900, when trying to drag the screen, the N900 drags to entire page so to try and scroll though your messages is cumbersome. I wouldn't recommend this.
