Introducing Maemo 5 (Part 10): Images on the Nokia N900

While we covered how the Maemo 5 Camera UI looked and worked, we didnt mention how Images are handled in the Nokia N900.

So here’s a little bit about that.

All of the Images you take with the Nokia N900 is listed in the “Photos” app.

This can include Images taken with the N900′s camera, or downloaded, screenprints, etc.

Tap on the Photos Icon and you’ll see all your Images sorted by date (by default) arranged in a Grid pattern with their thumbnails.

If you wish you can tap on the top toolbar to make changes such as Filtering by Folder, Filtering by Date, by Tags, Editing the Image Tags, Sharing or Deleting Multiple Images, etc.

Filtering by Folder allows you to only display pictures taken by the onboard Camera, or from a custom folder, or view all Images in the device (default).

Whereas, Filtering by Date allows you to choose to display Images from a certain date, or within a certain time (date) period.

Like we mentioned, you can also edit Tags of multiple images, etc.

And you can filter by Tags. If you’d like to see only Images under your “Friends” tag, etc.

Ofcourse you can also choose to share multiple Images via your Sharing service, or via Bluetooth.

Getting into the settings menu, you’ll be able to sort by Date or by Name if you’d prefer. You can also group by Month, Display Metadata indicators or choose a slideshow speed.

Coming back to the Photos app, all you have to do is tap on an image thumbnail to open it up.

As you might notice, there’s a tiny slideshow icon at momentarily appears at the bottom of the screen, which you can touch to start a slideshow. This disappears in a second or two though.

Also, images open up in fullscreen automatically, but you can tap where on the image to make it go out of fullscreen mode.

You’ll notice several icons appear at the bottom, which are (from left to right) Rotate Image, Crop Image, Add Tags, Crop and Delete Image, icons respectively.

On the top bar you’ll see the Image name, and the number of the image among the total number of images you have.

The Cropping tool is pretty cool.

And very handy if you want to, say, crop a person’s picture from a group pic, to use it as a contact avatar, etc.

You can also add tags to an Image.

These in turn, help you keep your images better organized. Ofcourse, since the N900 also Geotags images, you can view the Image’s Geotags too.

Lastly, you can also share your image.

Via Bluetooth, via Email, or via a service (like Pixelpipe, Facebook, Twitter, etc).

It’s worth noting that in order to share via a service, you’ll have to have a Sharing service configured on the N900.

Coming back to the Image, tapping the toolbar at the top of the screen brings down a list of the following options.

As you can see, here you can Save the Image, Rename it, Mark it as a Favourite, Set it as an Avatar or Background Image, Edit the Image, or view more Details on the Image.

The Image editor has a couple basic functions such as Red Eye Removal, Flip the Image Horizontally or Vertically, Brightness, Contrast and Resize.

The Image details, as you’d expect, gives you about all the information about the Image that you’d need.

Along with the GPS co-ordinates too. You can also edit your Image Meta-data.
