One more thing that Maemo 5 does awesome on the Nokia N900, is handle Conversations.
“Conversations” in this case, means anything from Text Message conversations, to IM conversations you’ve had.
And here’s a little bit about it.
Tap on the “Conversations” icon in the N900′s main menu, and you’ll see the Conversations app pop up, listing your recent conversations.
Like we said, this could be any IM conversations you’ve had on your N900 while online, or any SMS Text message conversations you’ve had.
All your incoming and outgoing messages to/from a certain contact, are nicely organized in a threaded message format. This can be incredibly useful in certain scenarios, as well as help keep the clutter down in your inbox.
For example, here’s my Network provider spamming me with random text message adverts.
As you can see, each message is listed with it’s time and date sent or received in the corner. If you’ve assigned an avatar (display picture) for that contact, it’ll be shown at the left (otherwise you’ll see the default blue avatar).
Oh and you can add emoticons.
The N900′s conversations app has a nice list of built-in emoticons which is a small, but nice little ‘feature‘. It automatically shows emoticons in any received texts too.
You’ll notice that you have to type your message at the bar in the bottom part of the screen, which has a handy character count on the right side, to let you know if you’ve gone over the text character limit, etc.
If you’d like to open the Contact’s info, all you have to do is tap on the bar at the top of the screen, and the following menu will drop down.
You can also choose to Clear (delete) the entire conversation from this contact.
Returning to the main conversations screen, you can easily send a new text message, by tapping on the “New SMS” tab.
That will bring up the above screen, where you can choose whom to send the text message to, and start typing away on the N900′s keyboard to type a message (or use the virtual keyboard).
Again, there’s a character counter at the bottom so that you know how many characters you have left.
But that’s just text messaging.
It’s basically the same for IM conversations too, but you have to tap the “New IM” tab to get started.
Of course you’ll have to be online to do that though. You can do this by settings your Status to online (as we mentioned in an earlier post).
Otherwise, IM conversations are basically the same. All messages to and from your contacts are stored in a nice threaded view.
Back at the main menu, you can also choose to tinker around with more settings to do with the Conversations app.
Things like deleting conversations, editing your accounts, etc.
You can also choose to receive delivery reports (although I’m probably the only one who still does that).
Worth mentioning, is that there’s a neat little Conversations Widget for the N900′s homescreen, that you can download from the Dev Repository.
It’s not great, but it does let you keep a watch on your latest new messages.
Here’s a short video to give you a better idea of Conversations on the Nokia N900.
As you can see, Maemo 5 really does a great job at helping you keep track of all your Text and IM conversations. All nicely sorted in your inbox.
Have a question about Conversations on Maemo 5 ? Something we missed ? Do let us know in the comments below y’all !
I'm very new to all this..... i used to have Nokia chat on my N95 which allowed me to pick up im messages that had been left for me by contacts when I wasnt on line so i could then pick up when i logged on. Can the OVI im do this on my N900? A friend has been sending me messages but I get nothing?
Hey there !The Virtual Keyboard can be used anywhere, in any app/page as long as you have it enabled (By Default it's "off" on the N900). I was only able to choose English on my unit, but unfortch that's the only language I had on my device, so I cant answer that :(
hey! can the nokia n900 hold an infinite amount of text messages? meaning that it would not delete by itself the older conversations you have on the phone?
