Maemo 5 has a really nice and easy way to manage your Internet connections on the Nokia N900.
Whether it’s Wifi, 3G or a network Dataplan (like Edge or GPRS), here’s a little bit about it.
The easiest place to manage your Internet connections, is at the Homescreen on Maemo 5.
All you have to do is tap on the bar at the top, and the following options drop down.
You’ll see a while category for “Internet Connections”. Tap that, and the following list appears.
From here you can manage all your Internet connections. As you can see we were connected to a Wifi network called “BM Buf” (and hence the tiny wifi icon in the toolbar, in the first screenshot above).
Here you can choose to disconnect from any sort of dataplan, or connect to a new one. Any nearby Wifi spots (that are not hidden) appear here, so that you can connect to a new one if needed.
You’ll also notice your network dataplans here, such as our operator’s “Mobile Office” GPRS plan listed above. Each ‘type’ of dataplan has a symbol to help you easily identify what kind of connection they are. You can easily disconnect or connect to any plans from here, although it’s worth mentioning that you only seem to be able to connect to one internet connection at a time (ie: you cant be connected to a GPRS plan and a Wifi plan at the same time, etc).
Another way to keep a more intrinsic watch over your Internet Connections, you can head on over to the “Internet Connections” section in the settings menu under the Main Menu of the Nokia N900.
From here you can tinker with all sorts of settings, such as setting your Wifi search interval, whether you want the device to automatically switch to Wifi when available.
You can also set your device to ask you before connecting to any plan, or to just connect automatically.
This is great if you’d like your device to automatically connect to your GPRS plan, or your Wifi without annoying you with a prompt.
Ofcourse, from here you can also manage your other network dataplans.
The entire list of Internet access points that you’ve connected to before, is stored here. I havent found a way to sort them by priority though.
And ofcourse, you can tap on any internet connection name to edit it, if you’d need to.
You can also search for new networks or create a new Internet connection access point if needed.
To give you a better idea of how Maemo 5 handles Internet connections, here’s a short video overview.
