Introducing Maemo 5 (Part 6): The Homescreen on the Nokia N900

One really cool thing about Maemo 5 (and hence the Nokia N900) has to be it’s Homescreen.

And here’s more about it.

First up, Maemo 5 allows you to have up to 4 Multiple Homescreens. Each of these are customisable, each able to have their own sets of Widgets, Wallpapers, etc. And they’re all just a side-swipe away !

For Example, here’s my N900′s homescreen right now.

Screen 1 :

Swipe that in a direction (left or right) will take you to Screen 2 :

And swiping that in the same direction, will take you to Screen 3 :

And so on, Screen 4 :

Swipe screen 4, and you’re right back to screen 1 again, because the homescreens are all loop-able (which allows for some very cool wallpapers). Ofcourse you can swipe to and from any screen, to navigate them in the order they’re in.

Editing your Maemo 5 Homescreen is pretty easy too. All you have to do, is double tap on any empty part of the screen, and you’ll see the “Edit” sprocket icon drop down on the top right side.

Tap the icon (if you dont, it’ll disappear back up) and your device will go into ‘Edit mode’, where all your icons and widgets on the Homescreen look like this :

You’ll notice the “x” marks next to each Widget and Icon. Tapping the ‘x’ mark removes that particular icon or widget from your Homescreen.

In this mode, you can also touch-and-hold on a Widget or Icon, and drag it to another place in the screen, or to another Homescreen.

Once you let go, the Widget/Icon stays in place to where you’ve left it. There are no pre-determined ‘slots‘ or ‘spaces‘ for Icons or Widgets on the N900′s homescreen, so you’re free to place them anywhere you’d want.

You’ll notice the Drop-down Menu bar at the top of the Homescreen in Edit Mode. Using this, you can add more Widgets, such as a Photo Slideshow, Facebook, Rss Feed, Weather, Music Player or Location Widget, etc. Some Apps (like Mauku) have widgets too.

Most widgets only allow you to have one instance of them running though. This means you cant have a Mauku widget running on two homescreens or so, for example.

You can also add a shortcut to a Contact, or Bookmark to a Website.

The Contact shortcut displays the thumbnail you’ve assigned to them, while the Bookmark Website shortcut displays a Thumbnail of the Website.

Apart from this, you can also add Shortcuts to various apps that you’d want.

This will add the App’s icon, to the homescreen, which is a great shortcut for apps that you might use a lot, and if you dont want to navigate through the menu to use them.

Ofcourse you can also change the Homescreen background if you wish. On the screen you’re on, or for all the homescreens.

If you’d prefer to have a picture of a friend or loved one, etc. There are some neat Image sets included in the n900 though.

And ofcourse if you want to change more than just the Homescreen wallpaper, you can also change your Theme.

There are two themes included with the N900, and tons more on the Ovi Store and App Repository. I still really like the N900′s Nokia Nseries Theme though !

And if 4 Homescreens is too much for you to manage, you can always deactivate some screens.

I like to keep them all on and activated. Cant have enough Homescreens y’all !

Here’s a short video of the Nokia N900′s Homescreen and how it all works :

Heya Bowen ! Yup, saw that same video too. But theory that's actually a pretty good idea. Cant have enough homescreens imho :D

Nice post CJ! Your 4 screens look very similar to mine. It is amazing what one can do with the space. I wish there were more screens. I saw a video "idea" where by one can swipe up and down, and diagonally, as well as left and right, thus one could have 9 screens. AWESOME!!!!

Wondering whether if the portrait mode is supported how will the homescreen be handled?
