The Email experience on the Nokia N97 Mini is a whole lot better experience than on the Original N97.
Mostly because it includes the Nokia Messaging Email service out-of-the-box.
Here’s a bit about Email on the Nokia N97 Mini.
(Note: The N97 Mini in this review is on firmware version 10.0.020 running Nokia Messaging Email version 10.0.1.39 . Some features might change or improve in newer software versions.)
The Nokia Messaging for Email service has come a long way on S60v5. And we were glad to see that it’s available on the N97 Mini.
When you first start up the N97 Mini, it takes you through a setup Wizard to customize the phone according to your liking. One of the steps, is to setup your Email.
If you skip the Email Setup at startup, no need to worry. You can go to the “Phone Setup” app and re-do it again later.
Once you choose to proceed, it takes you through the Email Setup.
And once in the Email Setup, it’ll ask you to enter in your Email Address and Password. Now if you’ve previously created an account at Email.Nokia.com, you can enter in this email address, to get the list of all your Mailboxes sent in, to your device. Otherwise, the Email address you use to sign in for the first time, is your new Nokia Email account Email address.
After the client connects and verifies your Nokia Email account, it’ll start to pull in your different Email services (the ones you’ve subscribed to, at Email.Nokia.com) and list them out. As you can see, the S60v5 Touch UI of Nokia Messaging is quite different from the S60v3 non-touch version. You have to choose one default Email Mailbox, and that’s the one shown whenever you open the Email Application.
You can tap the icon of an email service to see your Emails listed out by date :
And you’re not limited to just the Inbox either. You can switch to another Email Service, or another folder, right from that screen.
You can also choose to arrange your Email by Date, or Subject, Sender, etc :
Emails are listed out according to Date by Default.
You can also collapse each date section to make viewing them easier.
It’s worth noting that Nokia Messaging only pulls in the last 3 days worth of emails by default, but you can change this option to upto a month, in the settings menu. You can also add new mailboxes here. Web Email services like Gmail,Hotmail or Yahoo, or Corporate accounts (The N97 Mini has support for Mail-for-Exchange), POP3 or IMAP, the Nokia Messaging Client on the N97 Mini can pretty much handle them all.
Along with other options.
You can also choose whether to sync drafts, sent items, etc.
You can also choose when to sync.
You can also configure one of these mail boxes to show on your Homescreen, as a Widget.
It’s unfortunate that you can only select one mailbox, and one Email widget to show on the homescreen though. Some people would prefer to see more. This widget also only shows your last 2 emails in your Inbox. Tapping the Widget takes you to the Email App.
This is just one of the many settings you can tinker around with, under your Global Settings in the Nokia Messaging Client.
Some of these settings are particular to that Mailbox.
One slightly annoying goof on the Nokia Messaging Client for S60v5, is that you cant seem to be able to choose your Access Point. Atleast I couldnt for the life of me, find out where that option was. It just seems to automatically use the first Network Dataplan that it used to sign up with. This is annoying because I’m on Roaming right now, and I couldnt get Nokia Messaging to use my Wifi instead of the Data Plan it currently uses. Hopefully something that will be fixed in an upcoming version ? Because it’s fixed on the non-touch version of Nokia Messaging.
Coming to back to the Emails particularly, their implementation is basically the same as in the non-touch version on the E72 and E75 earlier. Composing an Email is a piece of cake.
You can choose from which Mailbox you’re sending the Email :
Add Attachments or change Priority :
Add a CC or BC :
All the basic features you’d expect from an Email Client really.
Viewing an email is also pretty quick. It’s worth noting that if your network dataplan supports it, Nokia Messaging will automatically start pulling in and sending your emails according to how you’ve configured it.
If your email contains an HTML version, you’re given a choice to view that instead. Any links in an Email, are clickable and open in the default web browser.
You can reply or forward all with just one tap.
And then there are more options available such as Calling the Sender, Composing a reply, selecting text to copy/paste, etc :
So basically, you have all the standard features you’d expect from a proper Email Client.
Here’s a short video showing you how Email on the N97 Mini looks like, and how it works :
Do you have any questions about Email on the N97 Mini ? Something that we might have missed ? Let us know in the comments y’all !
Hey. Every time I try to set up my e-mail, it says it can't connect to the server, and that I should try later. I can browse just fine, but it just wont connect to the email server.
Nokia is pitching the N97, which packs speedy 3.6Mbps HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, as a handset for Web-obsessed users for whom a minute away from the Internet is like a minute without oxygen. We had no trouble staying connected via Wi-Fi and 3G, and we appreciated the feature that automatically showed us the sign-in screen for the open wireless network at our secret CNET UK base. On other phones, we have to remember to launch a browser to view the page before we can start using the connection. Nokia N97 Review
Hi! This information is very good. I have a question. I had configured my yahoo and gmails using this method, but recently, there was some problem in my internet connection, and emails were not getting updated. So, I removed my mailboxes, got my internet connection renewed, and now when I am trying to re-configure my email accounts. I have tried setting up my email account from Applications-Email, Set-up wizard, and Messaging-Settings-Email... everytime it asks my email id, password and then asks whether I want manual account or Nokia messaging account, I click add to my Nokia messaging account,... then it says completing set up... and just returns to the previous screen. Could you plese help me in this... I do see my emails updating on the homescreen Email widget though, but in Applications-Email, I get back to the same set-up procedure wizard... it keeps asking me my address etc everytime... Thanks.

Sure, you have to go to your Email Service (Eg Gmail) then go into Tools-->Settings-->What to Sync then choose your inbox and go to "Remove Older Than" and change it from 3 days to another settings. Works on mine atleast :)
@Cj, are you sure you can change setting for fetching more than 3 days emails? I am unable to do it.
