Nokia has released the next software development kit (SDK) for its Series 40 mass market mobile devices – the Series 40 5th Edition, Feature Pack 1 Lite, providing third party developers with new tools to create unique applications for millions of mobile consumers being served by Nokia Series 40 Lite devices across the world. While Series 40 is the world’s highest volume mobile developer platform, the Series 40 Lite devices represent some of Nokia’s most popular mass market devices.
Available for immediate download at www.forum.nokia.com/tools, the Series 40 5th Edition, Feature Pack 1 Lite will foster innovation among developers as they can now target the entire Series 40 Lite device family with a dedicated SDK.
The Nokia devices that run on Series 40 Lite include Nokia 5000, 2680 Slide, 2320 classic, 2323 classic, 7100 Supernova, 2720 fold, 2220 slide – mobile phones that have been designed for people around the world who like and need simple things that work well. The SDK is based on Nokia 2680, which typifies the Series 40 Lite balance of ease of use and entertainment functionality.
The SDK includes features such as Java runtime, APIs, emulator, example applications & documentation and API reference. This SDK will support popular IDEs Eclipse and Netbeans, and will also feature support for Indian regional languages like Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Marathi and Bengali.
Series 40 5th Edition, Feature Pack 1 Lite provides developers with global reach to consumers who love to use their Series 40 Lite devices everywhere. Series 40 Lite offers big volumes and good compatibility as it supports Java™ Technology for Wireless Industry (JSR-185) which is the first industry-wide compatibility standard by the Java Community Process. Java APIs in Series 40 Lite provide functionality to create connected Java applications over HTTP, SMS and Bluetooth connection. Mobile Media, File connection, PIM, Security and trust services APIs are also available for Java developers to use.
Series 40 Lite devices has an XHTML browser for internet connectivity, as one of the Series 40 promises is to take internet to the next billion. Some selected Series 40 Lite devices also include a pre-installed Opera Mini browser to optimize the data traffic and internet accessibility for consumers. Series 40 Lite devices come in many shapes and sizes, but for the developer’s convenience the main screen of the devices have only two formats: 128 x 160 and 240 x 320 portrait displays.
The Series 40 5th Edition, Feature Pack 1 Lite SDK provides Java class libraries, APIs (including the Nokia UI API), relevant documentation and a device emulator for testing Java and browser content.
