Nokia E72 : All about the 5 Megapixel Camera (Image & Video Samples)

Now I know the Nokia E72 is supposed to be a business phone and all, but I couldnt resist talking about it’s camera first.

Nokia E72 Camera

The E72 comes with a 5 Megapixel Standard Nokia Lens Camera, with a Single LED  Flash. While it’s not the best camera optics available on a device, the results are pretty impressive, and a heck of a lot better than any Eseries Device before it.

Note: The Nokia E72 used in this camera review is on version 021.024 Firmware, which was the latest at the time of this post. Since this firmware does not support Geo-tagging, none of the images in this review are Geo-tagged.

Note: Since the Nokia E72 is not a camera-oriented device, we will not be providing commentary on each image, as we usually do.

You can check out our Entire Camera Sample set on our Flickr Album, or read on for our picks of them.

Camera Interface :

The interface on the E72’s camera is pretty much identical to it’s Nseries counterparts, and the E71 and E66 before it. Chances are, if you’ve used a Nokia Symbian device lately, you’ll know how to work it.

Screenshot0005

A disappointing surprise, was that the E72 does not support Geo-Tagging for Images (or Video) yet. I hope that this will be added in, in a future software/firmware update.

Images can be taken at resolutions up to 5 Megapixels, and Video at (kind of disappointing) 15 fps VGA.

There’s also a panorama mode built in.

As you can see, the E72 camera does a pretty decent job for a standard Nokia (non-carl-zeiss) lens. The 5 Megapixels help too.
Obviously you cant go in as deep as you would with an N82, N86 or Nseries device, but it seems to handle close shots pretty okay.
You might also notice a slight purple-ish tint to a couple of the images though.

You’d notice that the Single LED Flash does give a Blue-ish tint to some of these images, as expected. The Images arnt great, but decent enough I guess.

Mid-Range shots seem to be as you’d expect really. Not great but not bad at all either. You’d probably notice the purple-ish tint appearing in some of these shots again. The E72 isnt great at handling sunlight, which is why the sky seems completely white in Image 3 when actually it was a pale blue.

Again, pretty much what you’d expect. The Blue tint caused by the LED Flash appears again here.

As you can see, the results are pretty good. The Purple-ish tint remains in some images, and the E72 camera does have a few problems with light management and color management in a couple pictures, but nothing too bad.

The results, again, are as you’d expect them to be, with a single LED Flash.

Panorama mode :

We took just one panorama shot, in live traffic unfortunately. The results are pretty good, and admittedly, in a better (read: Non-moving) environment the stitching of images will be a lot better. That is, there wont be any “ghost” images appearing in the picture like in the panorama above.

=========================

Videos :-

(Without Flash) :

Videos are recorded at VGA resolution at just 15 fps (frames per second). Not great at all, but okay I guess.

With Flash :

=========================

Conclusion :

You have to admit, the E72′s Camera is pretty much the best one on an Eseries to date (not counting the Video recording at a lousy 15fps). Which I know, isnt saying much, but the results are pretty decent.
As an N82 user, my only problem with using the ol’ E71 as my main device, was that its camera was too poor to be used in my everyday scenarios.

Nokia E72

The E72′s camera however changes that. If a camera matters to you, and you really wanted a business device, then the E72′s definitely recommended.

The Images speak for themselves ! Remember, you can check out our full Nokia E72 Camera Sample Set on Flickr to view more images we took.

I LOVE E72! I will buy this phone hopefully next week :))

Seeing your still and video clips, you have achieved better results than I have with my new E72. I've not really tried video yet. I am not enamoured with the still camera, but to be honest I am yet to be impressed with a cam phone picture.Your post was encouraging thanks.

I wonder why geo tag was not a part of E72. I guess with next firmware update nokia will include all the missing things in this device. Till then I have a small solution for Geo tagging feature. Refer my blog.http://wp.me/pJv76-y
