Nokia Green Explorer gets an Update

Remember Nokia Green Explorer ?

Nokia Green Explorer

Of course you dont. Nokia barely said a thing about this new Environmental Initiative of theirs.

Let me clue you in on this service.

Nokia Green Explorer works with its partners to provide sustainable tips and advice on how to live green and travel clean. You can share your experiences and ideas here and help make a world of difference. Our partners include WWF, who provide the country-specific green facts and tips on greener living; Lonely Planet whose images and descriptions can be found on destinations; Jamblemag whose green travel news we show on our main page and whose eco city guides you can find on a number of destinations; routeRANK who have created a trip planner with CO2 emission calculator, which we are linking to. And we are especially proud of our new partnership with UNESCO World Heritage Center, and the content on all their sites we are now showing on our site.

By visiting just one site you can find information and eco tips about a destination, check out local WWF projects and UNESCO World Heritage sites nearby, and get visitor tips and viewpoints. The focus of the service is shifting from eco travel to sustainable lifestyle – after all, all the places we visit are home to someone. Green Explorer also supports the raising trend of “staycation”; people spending their vacation close to home and exploring their surroundings.

Green Explorer is a web-based service, but the device experience is a key point from consumer experience perspective. The mobile site can be accessed on the go, and the Green Explorer widgets are available for free in Ovi Store for several Symbian devices. With the widget, you can save your favorite data in a mobile notebook and use it offline while traveling, without having to pay for roaming costs.

Nokia Green Explorer received a major update today. Apart from getting a website makeover, the service is now hosted on, and integrated into Ovi.com which means you can sign in and do most things with your Ovi.com account. We hope.

Here’s what the BetaLabs blog post had to say :

Green Explorer now has a new Ovi look and feel and you can use your Ovi account to access the service. This is a real improvement since we were having difficulties with the registration emails. The URL has also changed to Ovi.com instead of Nokia.com. There is a new category called Get Inspired in the web service, where you can find inspiring articles from eco-minded bloggers on sustainable lifestyle and green places & events. You can give your comments on all articles, unfortunately not yet with your Ovi account but simply with your email address. We are working on getting this new area also under the same registration and regret for the inconvenience. Also, we are now using Ovi Maps so that you can see the destination you are interested in on a map. This is currently only available on the web. We are working on getting more Maps experience into the mobi site as well as converting the Get Inspired into mobile as soon as possible.

On top of the technical changes we are also changing the angle of the content provided so the service will help people green their every-day life and not just when travelling. A couple of new partners have been published, and we are especially proud of our new partnership with UNESCO World Heritage Center which allows us to show their sites around the world in our service. More new content partners are going live in the near future, so stay tuned and start creating tips and comments in Green Explorer! (Green Explorer in Beta Labs)
