Using the FM Transmitter on the Nokia N97

The Nokia N97 has one little awesome feature that doesnt seem to be getting as much attention as it should be. Oh yes, I’m talking about the Built-in FM Transmitter on this baby.

FM Transmitter on the Nokia N97

As you might have guessed, the FM Transmitter lets you broadcast music from your device, via an FM Signal. Hence, any radio device you have (obviously in close range only) will be able to pick up your broadcast and listen in to your tunes. This is perfect if you have a Radio system in your car ! Just load up your N97 with your favourite tunes, start up the FM Transmitter, and play music as you normally would. You’ll be able to hear it all, on your Car Radio.

Personally, I love this little feature, and more Nokia devices should have it. Seriously. First of all, there’s no wires, no mess. Secondly this means if you or a friend are traveling in my car, and have music on your FM-Transmitter-equipped devices (like the N79, N97, etc), you can basically listen to tunes from both devices, easily, on the Car stereo. How cool is that ? And you dont need an expensive car stereo system to get it going.

Wait, so what DO you need to get this going ?

Well, first you’ll need an N97, or any Nokia device with the FM-Transmitter built in (like the N79).

Second, you’ll need a radio that can be tuned to different frequencies. In my case I’ve used my Car Radio.

Remember, the FM Transmitter can only broadcast a signal so far, so make sure your device is inside the car, not lying back on your desk at home ;-) . It goes without saying that you should probably extend your car Radio antenna for best reception, yada yada.

And that’s it ! You’re now equipped to use that FM Transmitter on your N97 properly.

To start broadcasting a signal, head on over to the FM Transmitter App and start it up.

Scr000102

When it loads up, you’ll see that you can set your FM Broadcast Signal.

Scr000103

I’ve used the default 90.00Mhz on my device, because no other radio station in my town uses that particular frequency. Of course if you want, you can change it from anything between 88.1 – 108 MHz.

Scr000104

The App keeps a record of any previous frequencies you’ve used, so you dont have to worry about forgetting.

Scr000105

Once you’ve got the frequency set, go ahead and start up the FM Transmitter by activating it.

Scr000106

As soon as its turned on, you’ll get a small quick reminder about which frequency you’re broadcasting on, and what you have to tune your radio to, to listen in. Like we mentioned earlier, we were using 90.00Mhz here.

Scr000107

Remember, if you want to deactivate it at any time, just click the FM Transmitter button and select “Off”.

Scr000110

As a precaution, if you dont broadcast anything for more than a couple minutes, the application automatically turns itself off, to preserve battery life. From my experience with it, this isnt THAT much of a battery drainer to be honest. Atleast on the N97.

Now, with the FM Transmitter switched on, head on over to the Music Application in your device, and start listening to music as you normally would.

Scr000118

You’ll notice no sounds coming out of the Phone speakers, but all of that music coming out of your Car’s Speakers instead. Seriously, how cool is that ?

You can use the device as you normally would. All sounds will be broadcast-ed to your car radio. There’s even a small indicator icon on the upper right of the screen, to let you know the FM Transmitter is switched on.

Scr000122

And that’s all there is to it !

Here’s a short video, showing you the above steps and how easy & convenient it is to use the FM Transmitter on the Nokia N97 :

Yes indeed, I am loving this feature on the N97. Of course i’m a tiny bit of an Audiophile, and the quality of Music is your basic radio-FM-quality, so it isnt the best.

20072009481

Still, there’s no beating how convenient this feature is, especially for Car owners. No wires, no mess, and you dont need an expensive car audio system to listen to music on your Device.

Nokia, you totally need to include the FM Transmitter as a standard feature in more Nseries devices.

Do you have an N97 or a Nokia device with an FM Transmitter ? Do you find it as useful as we do ? Do let us know in the comments y’all !

I have a N97 for 1 year now, but the problem is that I cannot find the FM Transmitter at all on the phone. It issimply not there at all. Can someone help me with that?

Do you have the N97 Mini or the N97? On the N97, you can directly activatethe FM Transmitter from the Music Player's options.

I absolutely love this on N97. Shame that the iPhone, iPad and iTouch can't do it.

Hella thanks! I was just about to buy one from ebay when I googled 'N97 fm transmitter' and found this site!Just saved me some cash, thanks!

hmmmn, how about a software that uses it to transmit incoming calls to the car speaker it would be greater then

Did you change product code? If you change the product code to get the a new firmware a couple weeks earlier, you might put a code for a phone which has this feature disabled. For example, if you has a NAM model, you'll probably have this enabled, but if you put a product code for a model released in a country where the FM transmittions are illegal, you'll get this disabled. If that's the case, you'll have to set the product code back to its original setting and wait for a new software release to get this back on your phone.

how to dowanlod fm transmittar

hey i need this fm transmitter software for my nokia E 72 mobile fone plz send me the direct download link as soon as possible

I use FM-transmitter SE MMR 70 / MMR 60 on a SE W800. Due to regulations, the power-output is weak. Also due to regulations, (in Europe) we can not use anymore <87,5 Mc and 108.0 Mc. (These are nice freq's in overcrowed areas). . . Question: Are these freq's available on the N97? If not: Is it posible to change this in the firmware? Maybe also, because there are a few country's with litle differences. Question: Is it posible to use the fm-transmitter "automatically," every time when I use the mp3-player ? (Without turning it on every day / Every time?). When using a fm-transmitter, it differens a litle from car to car and also the spot where you place the phone / fm-transmitter. Even removing or shortening the antenna can help, because "the enemy" are a lot of other interfering stations...Peter Triac Netherlands

The next thing needed is a decent screen mount?Do you have any good links to some ?

my town is full of radio channel, so i cant use this feature T^T

Hi,can i do it on my 5800 xpress music? If i can do it,please explain it here :)Thanks

Man !! I lost the FM TRANSMITTER when upgraded my firmware's version, do you have any idea how to fix this please :((

Nice...I do always it with my n78!

Egads I didnt notice that was there at all. Much thanks srjones :)

You can actually start the FM transmitter straight from the Music application. When you have some music playing just go to options->FM transmitter from the Now Playing screen. I find this is quicker than first going into the FM transmitter application.

I find the transmitter's signal is weak - tried on my car stereo and my home music system - lot of cracking static on the background, and the volume is very low.
