Nokia denies plans for upcoming phone on Google’s Android

A lot of blogs were buzzing today morning, about a rumour run by the Guardian and NokiaMobileTalk that an “Industry Insider” told them that Nokia was planning on announcing a phone at Nokia World 2009 this September, that would be running on Google’s Android OS.

Google Android on Nokia N97

Obviously this created ripples across Symbian fans everywhere. Nokia however have issued a press release denying any such upcoming device.

Straight from the press release :

TALLINN (Reuters) – The world’s top cellphone maker Nokia said on Monday it was not working on introducing a phone running on Google’s Android operating system.

British daily The Guardian said on Monday the Finnish mobile phone maker was understood by industry insiders to be developing a smartphone that runs on Google’s Android software, to be introduced in September.

“Absolutely no truth to this whatsoever,” said a Nokia spokesman.

Google’s Android is a rival to Nokia’s Symbian software.

“Everyone knows that Symbian is our preferred platform for advanced mobile devices.”

Google’s Android has got a lot of traction in the cellphone industry, with many vendors planning to introduce phones using it, but so far only a few Android phones have reached consumers.

So there you have it. I found this news to be very much ridiculously impossible to believe when I first heard about it, so I’m happy that Nokia have gone on record to deny it.

That being said, I definitely agree with Mark over at TheNokiaBlog that, Symbian does need a facelift asap. Would a Nokia Google Android Device be that bad afterall ?
