Symbian Foundation considering dropping Java support

Over on the Official Symbian Foundation Blog, they recently posted an interesting read on why they might consider dropping Java Support in Symbian, in the future.

Without a shift in governance and business model, a slow and painful death for Java is inevitable. If Java can’t be persuaded to change, switching off its life support may be best for everyone.

Definitely worth the read. Head on over to their post here, to read the whole article or comment.

Do you use a lot of Java apps on your S60 Symbian Device ? Would removing Java support be a smart move or just plain ol’ silly ? Do let us know in the comments.

Personally, I’m a bit confused about the move. Although I dont really use many Java Apps, I do use a couple, like the Official Gmail App (which is J2me) and maybe one or two others. Maybe down the line we’ll have official Symbian versions of these apps and it wont matter ?

Time will tell I guess.

I strongly agree that Symbian is way better than Java. But, the main problem is that, majority of the compatible games are written in Java, along with a large number of softwares. I fear that putting an end to Java for the Symbian phones might cut off 70 to 85% of the compatible games and 45 to 50% of the compatible softwares. Though the Java developers might switch to Symbian in such a case, we would face a huge lack of applications and games for a number of months.
