The Nokia N82 : A Traveler’s Best Friend

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of the Nokia N82. Heck, I’d even say that its probably the best Nseries Device you can get today, inspite of Nokia’s newer offerings.

Over the last few days I’ve been so incredibly busy, even though I’m technically “On Vacation”. Having said that, I’ve found that my trusty ol’Nokia N82 has made things so much easier for me, while I’m here in Kuwait.

What am I talking about ?

Well let me start back when I was preparing to catch my flight to leave India. Thanks to the N82, and Gravity, I was able to keep my friends on both Facebook and Twitter updated on every step of my Journey from India to Kuwait. Using Twitpic and the N82′s great camera, I got to include an image with all these updates (More on this in an upcoming post btw).

And thanks to all of this, my Dad in Kuwait was able to check on my updates to know when to get to the Airport to pick me up, and my friends and family back in India were happy to know that I reached with no complications along the way.

Now that I was in Kuwait, the N82 is also my main camera. Thanks to that neat Xenon Flash and the 5 Megapixel, I’m able to be a total tourist and take great shots of the country at both night, and day.

Not bad, to carry on vacation eh ?

Another fact that I love is, here in Kuwait almost every Coffee Shop or Mall seems to have free Wifi. Ah, the goodness that is free Wifi.

Thanks to the N82, which has Wifi-support, I’m able to keep checking on my mail, or twitter, or Facebook while I’m on the move around these places. Why bother using expensive 3G, if I can use Wifi right ?

And the last piece de resistance, that solidified my faith in my good ol’ N82 came when I was walking to a mall the other day. Kuwait has changed quite a bit from 5 years ago when I left the place, and the scenery does look very different. While I was able to walk to the mall fine, I got totally lost walking back to my house.

In comes the N82 with its GPS and Nokia Maps (or Google Maps if you prefer). I was able to use my navigation license to ask it to tell me how to “Walk to” my house and voila, I was back on track again.

Keep in mind, while doing all this, I kept taking a ton of pictures along the way, and the N82′s battery still held up fine.

This isnt the first time I’ve used my N82 to its full potential like this. Last year while I backpacked around India, I used the same functions (well, except the wifi maybe) and the N82 sailed through it everyday and allowed me to take great pictures while I traveled around the country, while keeping me connected. Pictures like this :

I even did a whole post on pictures of the Taj Mahal with the N82.

Now I’m sure a ton of other Nokia Symbian devices can do most of these. But in my opinion, none of them come with all the features that made the N82 such a great package in the first place.

The greatest Nseries device ever made ? A traveler’s best friend ? You betchya.

Yes, it's a perfect travel tool, agreed!

I totally agree with this sentiment. I've been using my N82 for almost a year now. I tried other phones for a few days to a couple of weeks at a time but ended up coming back every time. Sure, I like the bigger screen of the N95 and the T-Mobile G1, Iplayed for a week with a friend's SE C905, had a Blackberry (can't remember the specific model but the one with the touchscreen) and always happily went back to the N82. With Garmin XT, LCG Profimail, the builtin Music Player and LCG Jukebox and the 5.0MP with Xenon flash camera and VGA30fps video recording, it's inmy opinion still as good as it gets.

Perfect travel companion for me as well since it replaced my N95-1 over a year ago. Most unique thing I've done wth my N82 is ride my motorcycle and navigate using Nokia Maps and its voice prompts without even touching the phone. I also loved that it has the best GPS in all the Nseries I've used. Unfortunately, it will be serving as my backup phone once my N97 arrives on June 2.

I know the N82 is the best N-series device of 2008, but I think it even transcends that. It is THE best N-series device until now. I keep trying other phones like E71, E75, 5800XM, N96, N85, N79, C905, UltraTouch, and X1, but I keep coming back to my N82. Nothing is as reliable. My only problem is the battery. It would be perfect if its battery was 1500mAh, like the one on E71, because normally I run a few applications in the background (Shozu and Nokia Email), and take a lot of photos and listen to music, and occasionally see my friends on Google Latitude on Google Maps and surf the internet on 3G and WiFi. But what the heck, it still is the best out there! Cheers!

Sorry, but apart from the Xenon flash which isn't used in any of the pics above then any one of several nseries phones do the same, even the 2 year old N95.

Ah but that's the point. The N82 is such a sweet package that it has both the xenon flash, and the features that most newer Nseries boasts. Hence my conclusion that its probably the best Nseries made so far, and why Nokia should consider bringing back Xenon flash instead of their silly Dual LED flash fetish.

Yeah I heard about it a while back and just could NOT understand why they didnt have an N82 NAM launched. Total missed opportunity there for Nokia.

That is indeed the phone. The only one flaw is the lack of US 3G frequencies but since I am on T-Mo US, it's immaterial anyway.

Not for non-touch devices like the N82, no. Nokia has mentioned that they're working on it though. You never know :)
