Nokia’s Ovi Share gets a Facelift, Improved Features

Nokia’s Ovi Share (formerly known as Share On Ovi) Image sharing website just got a much needed facelift today, accompanied with a new improvements in features.

The changes include:

  • Better Sharing – You can now share photos and videos individually without having to create an album first. Plus, comments on an item show to all viewers.
  • Higher Quality Images – A new photo transcoding platform produces higher quality images. The larger size on the media page shows more detail.
  • Improved Media Page – The media page has more room for your photos and videos–see with whom they are shared, the comments and the capture time and place.
  • Album Page – Channels have been renamed to Albums and the most recently used albums display on the home page for quick access. Plus, now you can change the number of thumbnails shown on one page.

  • Easier Experience – Tasks such as sharing, commenting and organizing are now easier to find and use with simpler menus and in-place actions.

I’m glad that they finally changed “Channels” to “Albums”. It was silly of them to go with the previous name in the first place anyway.

A lot of the improvements are of the better, but I’m a little bit ticked off that you’re stuck with ONE embed size now (small) whereas previously you could have Small AND Large embed sizes, which is why I used the service for images on this site in the first place. I cant find any option to change this default embed size to Large.

The Image uploader has been improved slightly. The Drag-and-Drop uploader is still there, which I’m happy to see.

The Location Tab now shows the locations your Geo-Tagged pictures or albums are all on, laid out on a map.

Also, now Ovi Share only supports Image and Video file types, so if you used to upload anything else there you’re out of luck.

There’s also a new Embed Widget called “FishBowl”, which is very cool.

The Improvements are definitely better, and make the site a lot more user friendly. But because of the lack of image size embed options that were previously available, it just seems like Two Steps forward One Step back, to me. I just hope the Ovi Share Crew are listening and let us choose Image Embed sizes again.

Apart from that, well done Ovi Share Crew !

Hi, Cj! With the new ovi share facelift, some things were disabled like the size of the photos until the team behind it finishes the update . Still, you can check all the info (and some tricks regarding the pics' sizes) on http://blog.share.ovi.com/ Keep up the good work on your site, Pedro =)
