The Nokia E75 : First Impressions

Okay, so we’ve used the Nokia E75 for a whole day now (1pm yesterday to 1pm today). So far, I have to say, I am a little impressed.

Nokia E75

What we liked :

  • The phone has a really good weight to it.
  • Build Quality is the typical Eseries excellence.
  • Feels good in hand when its in CandyBar Formfactor.
  • Call quality, as expected, is great.
  • The Default Email Client is now a new version of Nokia Messaging, which has been tremendously improved over the Nokia Messaging I’ve downloaded and used on the N82. You now have more options and prettier graphics. (We’ll go into more detail on this in an upcoming post)
  • The Slider is very snappy and works great. No wiggles or creaks.
  • The Slide-Out QWERTY Keyboard has a huge WOW factor to it, and impressed a lot of people. Has a nice rubberized feel to it, which prevents you from sliding onto adjacent keys. Keys take getting used to, though.

  • The screen is really bright, and very crisp. Copes pretty well with Direct Sunlight. Could have been a tad bigger but no complaints.
  • Has newer FP2 Transitions (off by default). One transition I particularly liked, is when you switch an application from portrait to landscape mode, and the screen zooms out in portrait, turns over and zooms back in, in landscape mode. Very Cool.
  • The Camera is Decent. Way better than the E71, and way better than I expected it would be. We’ll have a camera sample post up soon.
  • Has power saving mode, which we first saw on the N85.
  • Has Charging through USB port. We LOVE that.
  • The E75′s improved Homescreen allows Ovi Contacts to be used as a Plugin, so it can be used along with other plugins all together in one Homescreen.

=================

Battery is good, inspite of the 1000mAh. Here’s what we had going on with the E75 :

  1. Screen Brightness at Maximum
  2. Email check though Wifi and GPRS every one hour.
  3. 20 minutes of Music
  4. 10 minutes of Bluetooth File Transfers
  5. 20 minutes of Network Calling
  6. 30 minutes of Installing Apps or Texting (where the screen was constantly on)
  7. 20 minutes of GPRS usage
  8. 10 minutes of GPS usage
  9. About 5 minutes of N-Gage Gaming

Inspite of all of this, there’s still 2 bars left.The main battery consumers are the screen on max brightness, and WiFi and GPS usage. I’m not quite sure if the E71 would have lasted longer under the same conditions, but I’m pretty impressed the E75 lasted this long. Most other phones would have give up faster.

=================

What we werent sure about :

  • Uses the New Nokia Ovi Icons which we kinda like, but its hard to make out which icon is a folder on your first usage. The Menu setup is also a bit strange.

  • When flat on a desk with the Slider opened, the top part of the device falls back when the Dpad is used
  • Still a fingerprint magnet but not as bad as the E71 was. The Metal back though, catches fingerprints easily.

=================

What we didnt like :

  • The Loudspeaker is pretty Quiet.
  • N-Gage gaming is present, which is cool. What we dont like though, is that the N-Gage application only recognises the “Q” and “W” keys as “Gaming button A and B”. Bad move, when the QWERTY keyboard has so many keys to offer. Can be fixed in an update hopefully.
  • The Memory Card Slot is really tight in our unit, and I have not been able to open it.
  • When using in Landscape orientation, its easy to hit surrounding keys if you’re trying to use the Dpad. Not a problem in portrait mode.
  • When using in Portrait mode, its again, easy to hit the adjacent keys when using the left or right selection keys. Takes getting used to, I guess.

  • Our unit has a gap at one end of the device, when the slider’s closed and in Candybar mode. Worries me a bit. The slider is still solid though.

  • No leather cover or Lanyard Cable like the E71 and E66‘s that we reviewed had. Would have been nice to have these, as they gave the Eseries their own fun “extras”.

=================

So there you have it. Our first impressions after a day of usage. Let’s see if any of these change by the time we review the E75 later.

Remember, if you’d like to know anything about the Nokia E75, do leave us a note in the comments and we’ll try to include it in upcoming posts.

I'm having problem with that, thoug. Sometimes the cell gets lot of time when turning it on, and it did about 4 times freezed up totally. Maybe one time wasn't that, because I had to remove my battery, and when putted back again, same problem. The only way I made him came back to life was connecting to USB port. I've got this program - MemoryUp Personal - wich shows me that he has 180224 B in total, but frequently 95% is in use! (without any program opened!). Is that normal? How to free more memory?

I have seen an E75 in Singapore with much bolder fonts on the home screen making it much easier to read but the sim free e75 that I bought in the UK has very poor fonts on the home screen.Does anyone know how to improve this please?Many thanks,

Hey there ! It's not really that loud to be honest. I'd say it was less louder than the iPhone. It's speaker placement is the main reason for this i think.

hey i was wondering how loud is the speaker? is it louder then the iphone??

Hey hey ! Our Nokia E75 had about 60mb of ram at startup. Multitasking wasnt a problem for us on the E75 because of all that free ram, you can keep a lot of apps running in the background.

Hey there! I would like to ask how much RAM memory does Nokia e75 has(not internal memory that size of this is 85MB, that is clear, even if it is smaller that e51's). Because I wasn't able to find this information nowhere. Or at least, I would like to know how is accepting multiple memory application opened in background simultaneous ( e.g. skype+eBuddy+browser+...+) insuficient RAM would result in automatic closure of all applications excepting the phone's default standby). Thank you.

How loud is the phone when talking? I mean the part you actually hold up to your ear? I have bad hearing, and the E71 is about perfect for me when turned up about 80% of the way. How does the E75 compare?

Hey there ! The earpiece volume is fine to be honest. It's practically the same as the E71. We didnt have any problems with it :)

hello, nice report about the new nokia device! could you please tell me, what for themes are on board and what ist about the receiving from the e75? in a german forum a guy compared the e75 with the e51 and where the e51 has 40-60% network the e75 didnt found a network.

Hey there Sebastian ! There are two themes on board, one business and one personal theme and both depend on the color of the handset you get. Network coverage-wise we've really had no problems with the E75 whatsoever.

Hey, well written mate . sums up pretty much everything..good going

thanx............but still quite curious over e75............currently i m using bb bold..............its good for emails but quite weak on the multimedia side...............e75 seems to be a good option but my main priority is speaker volume...............which i found quiet loud in bold...................other than that e75 kills bold in most of the departments.

Thanx a lot CJ…………………Are there any built in instant messaging clients (YAHOO, GOOGLE TALK) like BlackBerry? And do u know when nokia is panning to ship e75?

Hey hey ! There's a built in email client which fetches your email from almost any service. No IM service built in though, but since the E75 runs on S60, there are tons of free clients that will let you chat with people on Msn, yahoo, gtalk, etc. The E75 is supposed to be released at the end of this month/early next month.

Good work CJ. Short but good review. Can u tell me about the loudspeaker volume of the E75 in detail coz eldar's review mentioned that the ringtones were quite loud. Is Nokia E75 louder than the nokia E71? Plz do reply.

Hey Jamil, I found quite the opposite actually. It's about the same loudness as the E71, but since the loudspeaker's on the back vs the E71's speaker on the top, the sound is muffled a lot when it's in your pocket or flat on a desk.

Hi cj, good review. I currently own nokia n82. Its almost 1.5 years old now. Was thinking of shifting to a new device. What would you suggest? How much of a camera compromise would it be for me to shift to e75? is it worth it for the qwerty and other goodness or i should wait? are they gonna give us another xenon in near future?

Hey Ashu ! I personally still love and use the N82 as my main device :) . It's still Nokia's best Imaging Device in my opinion. If you're really thinking of upgrading to a new qwerty device, the N97 might be more up your alley. The E75's camera is decent, better than the E71's, but not great and nowhere near Nseries standards now. I'm also waiting for a proper xenon-flashed equipped successor to the N82. Nokia's hasnt announced anything new with a xenon flash, so we'll just have to wait and watch in that department I guess.

Yes, nice well balanced review, CJ. Do u still think that its not really worth upgrading from the E71 as the E75 doesnt appear to offer any "outstanding improvements" or is the E75 winning you over? As we talked about on Twitter, my personal opinion is to hold out for the E55 which really does seem to "bring something new to the party"

I still stand by what I said there. From my first impressions so far, the E75 is nice, yeah, but not so much a worthy upgrade for E71 owners. However, if someone wanted to buy a new Qwerty device now, i'd recommend this over the E71. :-)

Nice round up! Am proud of you my boy! LOL! I'm still a little 'Jealous' of the fact that you got it before me!
