N85 vs N96 : Dual LED flash comparison

Both the Nokia N85 and the Nokia N96 have a 5 Megapixel Carl Zeiss lens equipped camera with a Dual LED flash. Both were released at the same time.

Previously here on ZomgitsCj, we took the N85 and the N96 and let them fight it out in a battle of who’s the better camera for daytime pictures. The winner there, was a bit of a surprise.

This time, we took them back into the ring for another match at who’s the better camera at night. Since this is Christmas week, the pictures taken are of a few Christmas decorations around ZomgitsCj headquarters.

Which phone’s Dual LED flash is better ?

Read the review to find out.

The following pictures were taken with the camera’s flash set to “Auto Mode“. No edits have been made to the images. The pictures were taken under low light conditions, but none were taken in complete darkness.
Both phones are on their latest firmware, at the time this article was published. The N96 is on firmware version 12.0.43 and the N85 is on firmware version 11.0.47 .
Unlike our usual camera comparisons, there will be no scores assigned in this one.

No Christmas decorations were harmed in the making of this camera comparison.

As you can see, there’s a big difference in both images.
The N96′s image is more clear, brighter and detailed but has that trademark blue tint of the led flash.
The N85′s image is not as detailed or bright. You can barely make out the three wisemen. But you have to admit, the image does look more “natural”.

Again here, the N96′s image is clearer and brighter with more detail, while the N85′s picture looks more natural but isnt anywhere as bright or clear.

Here the N96 does a really good job, while the N85′s picture is lot darker and less detailed. Boo !

Same case as before again.

And again.

This result is a little different than the others because the N96′s image is brigher and pretty well detailed, but in the N85′s image the image is pretty much darker than the N96′s but the Santa Claus in the center is more brighter and detailed, while the nearby curtain isnt.

In this result, the N85 has a better and more detailed image at the center again. Notice you can clearly read the “Merry Christmas” part on the N85 image while you can just kinda make it out on the N96′s image.

The Conclusion :

This one’s a bit of a thinker, which is why I didnt grade the image results this time around. The N85′s dual LED flash gets a more natural looking image while in come cases it loses detail.
The N96′s dual LED flash gets a brighter, more detailed and clearer image, but there’s the blue tint of the led flash in some of its images.

I might say the N96 is the winner in this one, but the N85 does get you a more natural result in the end. Personally, I’d choose the N96 over the N85 after looking at these results.

But, I’m still going to ask you, what do you think ?

better be N85. I take a lot of pictures in the daylight.. :D

I wonder how when the phones share similar camera modules, there is so much discrepancy in the output. How can Nokia implement different solutions for the same camera.... it's a bit out of logic don't you think.. Going by their logic, the N79 should be the worst of the lot then....

Are you sure that the new N85 firmware made a difference? I am left wondering, If the two phones have similar camera modules, how are the photos so different? Shouldn't the pictures be absolutely same, unless of course, within seconds the environment within ZOMGITSCJ headquarters changes!(LOL)I think Nokia is not doing a good job with its firmwares for the Nseries. The N79 maybe an exception...
