So the loaner Nokia E71 I had the pleasure of trying out, is headed back on its way to WomWorld who were nice enough to let me trial it.
I’m really missing the E71. Its by far the slickest and quickest S60 phone I’ve used to date. The little software exclusives that the E-Series firmware boasts work very well. And going to an N96 from an E71 is making me feel the changeover even more.
There are a couple things on the E71, that I’m really going to miss not having on the N96 though.
The E71 has a variety of software/firmware improvements/enhancements over my current fling, the N82. While previously I never thought I would ever see myself using an E-Series over an N-Series device, the E71 changed that. After I popped my Sim Card into it, I never ever found myself wanting to go back to the N82, except for camera-related incidents. 1. Email on the E71 : The E71 handles email like a dream. Just enter in a few settings and it was retrieving my emails on a time interval specified by me. You can choose whether the preview on the home screen only shows your email’s header, or as a header and pop-up or unread emails. I was happily using my E71 with my Gmail account. 2. Download on the E71 Now, Download! on any Nokia phone is still a far far cry from the iPhone’s app store or the G1, but just look at the amount of folders in the Download! app on the E71 : My N96 only has about 4-5 Folders in total. While its nice to see Nokia improve download on the E71, we all know that app has a long way to go. 3. Switch Modes Now this one’s a bit iffy. I thought I’d use this more often than I actually did. Still, its a nice feature though. Switch your home screen between business and personal mode. I only wish they added in support for profile changes too, in the switch application. 4. Customizable Home Screen (kinda) Sure its not as customizable as the newly announced N97, but atleast it lets you choose which shortcuts you want to display on the homescreen. On the N96 and other N-series phones, you can only choose to either display all homescreen applications or none at all. 5. Calender on the E71 The Calender application on the E71′s beautiful. All your meetings or memos are displayed neatly on the right side. Strangely even though the N96 is a newer phone than the E71, it still doesnt have this calender, and I really really wish it did, because its so much more convenient. 6. Full Screen Browsing Ah, gotta love full screen browsing. Normal mode : Fullscreen mode :
7. Messaging
The E71′s awesome QWERTY keyboard, coupled with its slightly improved messaging application means, texting and emailing on the E71 is a piece of cake.
I got so used to QWERTY and loved it so much, that I really hated my return to T9 on the N96.
If QWERTY wasnt enough, the E71 also has predictive text that you can turn on if you want.
You begin to type a few alphabets, and a word is suggested. You can choose to go with that spelling or keep typing to ignore the word that was suggested.
You can also choose other words, depending on the situation.
8. Encryption
The fact that the E71 has encryption, makes one feel a lot better that your data cannot be stolen.
9. One-touch keys
Gah. I got so used to these, that when I moved back to the N96, I kept looking for the contact key or the calender or messaging key out of habit after being used to the E71.
10. Better access to contacts
Spell out a contacts name on the main screen, and a short list of matching names from your contact list comes up. Doesnt get much easier than this. Infact, I hardly had to go into the contacts application in the E71 at all, thanks to this.
Speaking of which, even the contact app, has been updated a little. Press the right D-pad button and you can get access to a bunch of basic functions.
Dont even get me started on how awesome the build quality of the E71 was.
Nokia has very nearly converted me from an N-Series user to an E-Series user just because of the build quality and minor software improvements here and there.
But the main and only thing holding me back from making the switch, is that I need a decent camera on my phone, and after having an N82, my standards are very high in that department. Heck even the Nokia N96 wont do for me !

Ah Nokia E71. I’ll miss you !

@rkhi : Definitely recommend the N85 over the N79. The N79 doesnt really have anything "new" thats worth the change, while the N85 has that gorgeous O-Led screen.
LOLWhy do you buy a new mobile phone everytime it hits the stores?? lolForget the mobile phones, buy a plane ticket and come visiting me in Portugal!lol
Nice review + like your blog in general. I've had E71 for couple of months and really love it but...having just come back from a holiday in Egypt, I really miss having a good camera always on me. I'm thinking of going over to the N79 or N85; any thoughts ?....keep up good workRH
[...] colors are listed right next to the existing white and grey variants, andI have to admit, as much as I loved the Silver/Chrome E71 we reviewed, that Black E71 is looking pretty darn sexay. As if I needed more [...]
